Spirits of the Season
Spirits of the Season | Tanya Kirk
5 posts | 2 read | 9 to read
Festive cheer turns to maddening fear in this new collection of seasonal hauntings, presenting the best Christmas ghost stories from the 1850s to the 1960s. The traditional trappings of the holiday are turned upside down as restless spirits disrupt the merry games of the living, Christmas trees teem with spiteful pagan presences, and the Devil himself treads the boards at the village pantomime. As the cold night of winter closes in and the glow of the hearth begins to flicker and fade, the uninvited visitors gather in the dark in this distinctive assortment of haunting tales.

Pickpick

Bit of a mixed bag, but pretty good overall. I wish I‘d managed to read it on Christmas Eve like I planned, but circumstances were not having it.

My first festive #bookmail! I plan on finishing these beauties, A Christmas Carol (#acaroladay), The Snow Queen (#childrensclassicread2022), a collection of Poe's poetry and a short intro to Gothic lit for the #midwintersolstice games, #winterreadathon and #adventathon. I'm going for a spooky holiday vibe, if you can't tell. 👻

Pickpick

This was a really great collection of Christmas hauntings covering a wide range from hilarious to chilling, set on abandoned ships or crowded trains, in old manors and new houses in the suburbs. My favorites, some of which you can find elsewhere, were:

The Curse of the Catafalques by F. Anstey
The Shadow by E. Nesbit
The Snow by Hugh Walpole
Smee by A.M. Burrage

We enjoyed this Krampus tea during our book club meeting.

Twinkle Toes doesn't have the attention span for Victorian stories, sadly. 🎄💀

I love the tradition of ghost stories at Christmas. It‘s a time to be merry & bright, but there‘s a darker side too. If religious, it‘s a reminder of Christ, his life & suffering. It‘s also a time when we remember the past, those who are no longer w/ us, & the darkest & coldest month of the year. What better time to read a chilling ghost story, than gathered round a fire, w/ the flicker of candlelight or the twinkle of fairy lights on the tree.

LeahBergen Lovely photo! I‘ve been eyeing this book as I love a good ghost story at Christmas. 5y
catebutler @LeahBergen Thank you, Leah! I haven‘t read any of the stories yet, but from the list of stories it looks good! Let me know if you pick it up! 5y
