This Day in June | Gayle E. Pitman

I would use this book in my classroom to teach children about acceptance. This book is about LGBT pride celebration. I would use this book to teach respect, acceptance, and understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. It teaches children that we are all united.

This book uses color to convey meaning. This book is about LGBT pride celebration. Each page on the book uses colors of the rainbow. Some of the pages on the book are mostly one color. For example, there is a page that consists of mostly red. In the LGBT flag, red is used to represent life.

Blurb:
I would use this book to talk about how families can look different. Some kids have two moms, a mom, and dad, just a dad... I will also use the book to show the importance of celebrating one another.

Review:
This book uses color to portray happiness and that a party is occurring. Children get to see what different families look like as they go throughout the book. This book uses different shapes to portray different people of all shapes and sizes.

Challenged & banned for LGBTQIA content. #bbrc

The library where I used to work had a Drag Queen Story Time. Cherry Lemonade read the book to the kids. A mom & her children showed up late & missed it. I offered to read to her kids instead. She politely declined & said it wasn‘t the same as Cherry Lemonade reading it. People try to shut down these story times, but that mom was disappointed to miss it. That mom is awesome. #dragqueenstorytime

LibrarianRyan I agree. Lately across the US DQST has been interupted by proud boys bringing guns, moms of librety, etc. It's disgusting. Let people read to children. A few years ago, I suggested having the person who started the DQST and organization in New York be a speaker at our library conference. One of our planning committe members left over it. And puller her staff and all her support. It was her believe and “moral obligation“ that those types of 2y
LibrarianRyan things were not wanted or needed in central Illinois. The remaining committee decided to make one room of the conference that year, dedicated to the topic, including libraries in central IL and what worked and waht didn't.

Using colorful illustrations and simple sentence/line structures, this book acts as a tool to talk with kids about Pride. The info in the back offers talking points and activities different age levels can do, and I loved the explanation of each line of the narrative that is also in the back. These explanations take readers through LGBT history, meanings of phrases, and the current struggles faced. #BBRC #PictureBook Letter T

Librarybelle This title was challenged and banned so much in the US, that it ranked in the top 10 of 2018. 2y
LibrarianRyan I have this on my list. I‘m just awaiting my library hold. 2y

While I love this book, & think young kids will definitely gravitate towards it, I have to say my favorite thing about it has nothing to do with the story itself or the children it‘s intended for - it‘s the 2 sets of parent resources at the back of the book. The first goes through every sentence of the text & gives a quick⬇️

IndoorDame history on each line of text (in case you weren‘t sure how to explain leather daddies to a toddler). And the 2nd resource suggests good ways to talk to kids about LGBTQIA+ issues at specific ages. #BBCRPictureBookLetterD (edited) 2y
LibrarianRyan I've seen this on multiple lists but was not interested in checking it out. But leather daddies, yeah I might need to read this one. 2y
IndoorDame @LibrarianRyan I recommend it. It‘s not shy. And if you don‘t want to take a kid to a pride parade, this is actually a decent snapshot of what one looks like 2y

Woo Hoo! I've finished my Challenge to Read everything on the 2018 Banned or Challenged List. First quiet morning at home in ages. Spent it reading #11👬.
This Day in June was the only one not available from my local Library. I bought a copy to read and donated. I'll reread Marlon Bundo during Banned Books Week. 🐰

#MarchIntoReading

We love this picture book about a LGBT+ Pride Parade.

The text is very simple, great for little ones and grade schoolers, and the reading guide offers a fuller explanation of different groups in the parade, as well as age appropriate ways to ask questions and talk about sexual orientation.

I unfortunately don't have any #diversepicturebooks at home to photograph, but my job has allowed me to share some amazing books with the world that promote gender diversity and LGBT pride and I thought I would share one here for #marchintoreading

Hanging out at the reference desk. Check my awesome GLBT book month display! (No, I don't know why ALA decided on that particular iteration of the acronym, but I love the poster art from "This Day in June.")
