The Forest
The Forest | Edward Rutherfurd
A magnificent, sweeping history in which Rutherfurd captures the essence of the English heartland from Edward Rutherford, the author of Paris, London and New York. Few places lie closer to the heart of the nation's heritage than the New Forest. Now, Edward Rutherfurd, weaves its history and legends into compelling fiction. From the mysterious killing of King William Rufus, treachery and witchcraft, smuggling and poaching run through this epic tale of well-born ladies, lowly woodsmen, sailors, merchants and Cistercian monks. The feuds, wars, loyalties and passions of generations reach their climax in a crime that shatters the decorous society of Jane Austen's Bath, and whose ramifications continue through the age of the Victorian railway builders to the ecologists of the present day.

This #chunkster is the kinda family saga book I love to read. Not only is it full of history and I'm so there for that, but this author manages to draw you in with characters you'll want to take the journey with. I highly recommend this author.

Texreader I agree. He‘s terrific, when one has time to make it through his chunksters!! 1y

Just nabbed myself this little deal for the #NaturaLitsyBingo2023 fiction prompt. As it's 900+ pages long, I'll probably use a few free choice prompts too.

It took me a full 5 weeks to finish this book ONLY because there is no unabridged audio. This is sort of a family saga about generations of the same group of families based in The New Forest area over the last 1000 years. I loved all of the history in here, particularly getting a really broad view of how life, culture, and technology have changed in one small area over the last thousand years. Can‘t wait to pick up another by Rutherfurd. So good!

Not only does it begin with a medieval setting but it also is described as a family saga. I love both of these things so much and the book has started off strong!! Unfortunately there is no unabridged audiobook available, so I cannot listen on my long commute tomorrow. But I find that when I spend a lot of time reading a book, I get super immersed in the story. I‘m really excited to be reading this one.

Loved this one about five families who live in the New Forest whose lives interconnect over the years from 1066 to 2000. Beautifully written with a great sense of how the Forest evolves and progresses through the eras. Some great characters and love the fact that real life ones are mixed with the fictional. I was totally immersed. Sorry it ended.

“Engaging . . . A sprawling tome that combines fact with fiction and covers 900 years in the history of New Forest, a 100,000-acre woodland in southern England . . . sketches histories of 6 fictional families, ranging from aristocrats to peasants, who have lived in the forest for generations. . . . The real success is in how Rutherfurd paints his picture of the wooded enclave with images of treachery and violence, as well as magic and beauty.”

EadieB I haven‘t read this but I love family sagas! 5y

MY LANTA that took a while. 😜Its a great story and super interesting, BUT I think he could have made a story with 200 pages less 😳I am stuck between the Pick and So So rating- it was a good story overall, but the number of pages made it almost unbearable. The only reason I finished it was because of our Bookclub and 4 other people are struggling with it too ! 💙

1️⃣These are three things that make me happy; (top left) 215 lb 1 rep Deadlift PR!, (bottom left) my family, and (right) one of my dogs Gypsy- I love her smiles! 2️⃣4. 3️⃣Childhood- honestly growing up with my siblings. We definitely have fun now but those times were so much fun! 4️⃣ Not a Book budget really- basically just a hold on buying books needlessly when I can borrow from the library 5️⃣So Hard! Probably never talk about books 😱

Have taken a long break from this one but finally getting my act together and organized this 600 hulk.📚Disappointed with the SCRIBD audiobook that just came today 😱it skips this entire time period ( Lymington-1480) and skips on to year 1587 from year 1294. Was going to jump between the two types of reading ( audio and this hard copy) for when I am able to sit down and read vs when I can listen while doing other stuff. Very disappointed

🏋🏻‍♂️Ramin Karimloo (fave stage actor) ❄️Yes📚☕️After Work I go to Crossfit every evening, than before bed, I read & have tea ⛰Heights, to a certain extent. Also, small compact/ enclosed spaces 🧠I remember my dreams quite vividly, even some from my childhood. No reoccurring ones lately, but I do have them on a regular basis. Also recently connected the dots that I‘m a Lucid Dreamer. Anyways, I need to do better on writing these dreams down.

TheKidUpstairs Yaaasss! I saw him play Jean ValJean, it was a brilliant performance (and I've seen some GREAT ValJean's) 6y
Emily92Bibliophile @TheKidUpstairs I would have loved to see him as ValJean! I have seen him in Anastasia, but my favorite was him as The Phantom 💙I know he‘s a bit older than I am, but many of the actors on screen that are my age (25) seem immature still. 🙄 Ramin just seems an all around decent guy and passionate about what he does. One of the things I love about Kindle is when I‘m reading big tomes such as this. 725 pages and thick, and sometimes seeing how much far I have yet to read makes me less motivated 🤦‍♀️Hopefully with it being on Kindle,& my goal to read this book an hour a day, I‘ll definitely finish it within the two weeks borrowing period. 💙 This is the August read, but I just wanted to start already! This story looked so good, I couldn‘t wait a month !

BookishMarginalia I really like Rutherford‘s epics. Hope you enjoy it! 6y
Smrloomis I‘m the same - if I see how far I have to go sometimes I feel really discouraged! Hope this is a good one for you! 6y
Emily92Bibliophile @BookishMarginalia @Smrloomis thanks for the encouragement! Im enjoying it very much so far. If you have any recommendations of his other books for a “beginner” in Rutherfurd‘s books, please tag them here! (edited) 6y

Lcsmcat I really liked Sarum, but I spent one Christmas in Salisbury when I was a teen, so maybe it was nostalgia. 7y
MayJasper Hi @Cinfhen if memory serves me correctly there are many more threads, character groups, layers and storylines in London than in Sarum, reflecting the greater complexity of London over Salisbury I suppose. My personal preference was for Sarum because stories of building cathedrals/churches is a subject I am drawn to. 7y
MayJasper @Andrew65 thanks 😊 7y
MayJasper @Lcsmcat Sarum is my favourite too 7y
ReadingRuby I loved Paris so I would definitely recommend that too 7y

The Forest by Edward Rutherfurd is available for Q8.99 on the Kindle, Deal Of The Day. This book is a saga, like all Rutherfurd‘s books, based on the history surrounding the New Forest (England) through the ages. Just picked a copy up myself. #YearoftheChunkster

TrishB I enjoyed this one 👍🏻 7y

As I've come to expect from a Rutherfurd novel, I thoroughly enjoyed this story, or stories as it were. One continuous story composed of several smaller stories about the people of England's New Forest. Enchanting.

MrBook Rutherford is a phenomenal author. Carrying Michener's torch 😊👍🏻. 8y

I'm sad to say I've been neglecting my reading this past week. Trying to get back to it and put a dent in this massive novel

Autumn Love Rutherfurd! Just finished Paris a week ago. 8y
KtheBookwyrm @Autumn I've read both Ireland books and Sarum. They're very good, just very long and not something I can read one after another, particularly as I usually enjoy books like Sanderson's mistborn series or max gladstone's craft cycle. Rutherfurds novels are much slower 8y

One of the characters in this first section was a deer. I guess it makes sense, as she's an inhabitant of the forest too, but it struck me as a little odd.
