In this captivating science fiction novel from an award-winning author, public gatherings are illegal making concerts impossible, except for those willing to break the law for the love of music, and for one chance at human connection. In the Before, when the government didn't prohibit large public gatherings, Luce Cannon was on top of the world. One of her songs had just taken off and she was on her way to becoming a star. Now, in the After, terror attacks and deadly viruses have led the government to ban concerts, and Luce's connection to the world--her music, her purpose--is closed off forever. She does what she has to do: she performs in illegal concerts to a small but passionate community, always evading the law. Rosemary Laws barely remembers the Before times. She spends her days in Hoodspace, helping customers order all of their goods online for drone delivery--no physical contact with humans needed. By lucky chance, she finds a new job and a new calling: discover amazing musicians and bring their concerts to everyone via virtual reality. The only catch is that she'll have to do something she's never done before and go out in public. Find the illegal concerts and bring musicians into the limelight they deserve. But when she sees how the world could actually be, that won't be enough.

#VolumesAndVocals

This book is in my #TBR & I went for the title that fit the lyrics of #FeelinGood more than the vibe of the book since it‘s dystopian. 🤷🏻‍♀️

“Birds flying high
You know how I feel
Sun in the sky
You know how I feel
Breeze driftin' on by
You know how I feel

It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life
For me
And I'm feeling good
I'm feeling good”

This is by far best book I ever read. It is dystopian fiction. It shows the world like no other book I ever read. It is kind of criticism of social norms in technology Era.

This book has a pandemic / dystopian setting, but this is only a backdrop, really. Truly, this book is an homage to the power of live music and human connection. Great read.

Song For a New Day was absolutely marvellous! Set in the near future in a post plague and terrorism America where gatherings are illegal, it's about the power of music and human fellowship and creativity and life.

And fitting the Virtuoso prompt beautifully, it rounds out this quad of #fourfoursin21, as well as the Musical Instrument on Cover prompt of #booked2021.

Huh, well this is between a pick and a so-so for me. There was a lot to like but I‘m surprised that this was a Nebula winner. It just didn‘t seem that interesting from a Sci-fi point of view. I did like the characters however and I finished it so I guess that pushes me to a pick. Maybe it was just my mood...

I got to the end and wanted to start it again. Luce is a musician who played the last concert in the Before - a time before a horrible virus spread and public gatherings were outlawed. Rosemary recruits musicians for StageHoloLive a conglomerate bringing VR concerts to the masses. A beautiful celebration of live music and people trying to imagine an After.

The books read in March. The hearts are my 5 star reads with the tagged book as my favorite. Thankfully, none of my March reads were less than 3.5 stars. 🙌

This book was phenomenal! In a police state world, people traded freedom for security. But there's always the call of music and art and commuity. Given everything that's going on today, it is easy to make that trade. But we have to remember to reclaim our freedom once the danger is past. An amazing five star read! #stayhome24in48 #24in48 #readathon #catsoflitsy

The mail carrier brought me my BN order. I've read the bottom two already. Really looking forward to the top two. 🤩 I'll be adding those to the #24in48 #socialdistancing #readathon stack this weekend!

kyraleseberg It is so eerie that Sarah Pinsker foreshadowed everything happening now in her book!! 5y

Very timely with the Coronavirus bans in place across the country. A Sci-fi/Dystopian/Post-Apocalyptic story about a "future" where, due to a series of events starting with bomb threats, large gatherings are banned. We meet musician Luce Cannon as the events unfold around her and how she navigates the aftermath. We also met Rosemary, a SuperWally employee, who is tired of seeing the world through the Holospace. If you need hope, try this!

A dystopian story with a music focus? Yes please. In this scary not-distant-at-all future, large public gatherings like concerts are illegal after terror attacks and deadly viruses. People attend virtual reality concerts in Hoodspace but Luce Cannon continues to play live in small illegal concerts. Pinsker is a musician so she brings to life the vibrance, the awesomeness of live music. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

I really don‘t like dystopias that are too believable as a near-future direction for our current world. They are stressful, especially in today‘s ever-deteriorating world. But, with two lesbian leads, lots of forbidden rock music, and believable human interactions, this book made me feel like there can always be hope in any future. I loved Pinsker‘s short story collection and this novel is a great start to her full-length career.

New book day😄 what happens when the world isn‘t allowed to gather publicly anymore? How does that effect each of us and what happens to our modes of expression- like music? Guess I‘ll find out!

New books: Song for a New Day and The Ten Thousand Doors of January! I was in a book group on Goodreads with Sarah Pi, back in the day, so this is especially exciting.

No particular reason for using that shelf and my wedding bouquet (paper daffodils made by my wife -- yes, we are romantic as heck) for the backdrop; it just makes a nice picture.

A dystopia set in the near future when the U.S. government outlaws large gatherings after a terrorist attack.
An interesting premise focusing on music and the connection it creates. Strong story though I would've enjoyed more world building!
