There is a Welsh legend about a harp of gold, hidden within a certain hill, that will be found by a boy and a white dog with silver eyes -- a dog that can see the wind. Will Stanton knew nothing of this when he came to Wales to recover from a severe illness. But when he met Bran, a strange boy who owned a white dog, he began to remember. For Will is the last-born of the Old Ones, immortals dedicated to saving the world from the forces of evil, the Dark. And it is Will's task to wake-with the golden harp -- the six who must be roused from their long slumber in the Welsh hills to prepare for the last battle between the Dark and the Light.

I found it boring and then the author did something I hate. So I'm bailing on this book and the next. I'm done with this series.

I'm such a fan of Susan Cooper that I've lost count of the number of times I've read The Dark is Rising sequence.

kwmg40 I love this series too! 2y
johncadams @kwmg40 Me too! I often read and review it. I read it endlessly as a child so it's lovely to still be reading and sharing it now. 2y

The fourth in the dark is rising series finds Will in Wales, with his memory sketchy and trying to solve an old riddle that will lead him to the harp and the sleepers. Another must read. This series is really very good.

In a sharp departure from our spate of lovely covers we have this monstrosity. This Newbery winner is the fourth book in a series, does anyone know if it stands alone? #mcpl #mctbr

RachelAmphlett That‘s part of an amazeballs series I read as a teen - highly recommend you get them all! 7y
everlocalwest @RachelAmphlett I guess I'll have to find them all! I do enjoy MG fantasy so I'm looking forward to it! Thanks! 7y
RachelAmphlett @everlocalwest I like Abebooks.com for books that are hard to find - I‘ve been collecting books from my childhood through them for a while 😊 7y

everlocalwest @RachelAmphlett I love collecting vintage books! I've used Biblio a few times for out of print titles but I think I prefer stumbling upon them in used book stores and library sales - the serendipity of it adds to my excitement about my collection. I'm the king of the nerds. 😸 7y
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage In my book it has an author's note that says she wrote them all as standalones. The second in this series is my favorite and where the series title comes from - The Dark is Rising - and was a Newberry honor book. (edited) 7y
everlocalwest @BookHoarder32 Thanks for letting me know! A lot of people seem to really love this series! 7y

All that could be seen in him was the urge to hurt, and it was, as it always will be, the most dreadful sight in the world.
