Magical realism ✨
1. Our world, but with unexplained fantastical elements, magical without MAGIC 🪄 if that makes sense.
2. I‘ve heard amazing things about Nalo Hopkinson!
3. Yes. Absolutely. ✨

I hate when I get behind but will work to catch up.
My favourite author of colour is the amazing Nalo Hopkinson. She is a lover of Shakespeare as her father was a Shakespearean trained actor. She has a particular fondness for the Tempest IIRC.
I am blurbing this book of hers because she lived in Toronto when she wrote it and I was privileged to help her with some of the research on it.
This was....weird. The format of it was quite strange and took some getting used to. The individual stories were all compelling but the shifting between them was distracting at times. Some of the descriptions and scenes were very...visceral...which I found a little disturbing but they certainly set the stage effectively.
Anyone else reading this for #swordandlaser right now? This is the third book I have read by Nalo Hopkinson, who is one of the trifecta of Caribbean fantasy/science fiction authors, and the only one of the three I haven't met! She blends fantasy and magic and folklore and religion... Usually with strong female characters. This one is good so far but has made some people quit early with the sex and blood.
I've been meaning to read Hopkinson *forever* but our library doesn't have any of her books! If you're in a similar predicament, this seems like a pretty sweet deal. #weneeddiversebooks #wndb
First part of the month is always good for me, if not for my bank account or book shelves.
