Not much of a plot but so, so sad. Not feeling very patriotic after this one

#BookReport 28/20

I have been spending the week in my parents‘ beach cottage. Working, reading and doing daytrips across the border into Belgium. Things could have been worse!
Of the books above I enjoyed the tagged one and Loner a lot. Such a Fun Age was enjoyable too, The Shepherd‘s Hut was okay.

Megabooks Glad you enjoyed your vacation (and Loner)! 👍🏻 4y
TrishB Sounds like a good week 😁 4y
Cinfhen Sounds like a great energizing week ♥️ 4y
Kalalalatja Sounds lovely 💕 4y
JennyM Glad you are able to travel a bit again and be with family. And a good reading week also 👍 4y

Leroy, a wounded Iraq war veteran tries to kill himself. He winds up on life support and decides to retreat into a morphinated fantasy life. In the mean time Freddie, who witnessed Leroy's suicide attempt, and Pauline, his nurse, are engaged in their own struggles with modern America: the inequities of health care, the crush of debt, loneliness. Their kind, brave characters are touching - as is the book

Megabooks Agree @Cinfhen . Sounds a little too heavy for me. 4y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen @Megabooks The themes and their lives are hard indeed but the characters self are kind and the tone of voice is so respectful that it felt sad and hopeful similarly- if that makes sense. (edited) 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds thought provoking! 4y
alisiakae Sounds like a heavy read, but definitely a book that Would challenge me to read outside my comfort zone. I often avoid soldier related stories. 4y
arubabookwoman I loved this book! I bought 2 more of his books, but haven‘t read them yet. As you say, a sad story but the characters are endearing. 4y
BarbaraBB @4thhouseontheleft Me too but this isn‘t really about the man being a soldier. 4y
BarbaraBB @arubabookwoman I have looked up his other books too. I do intend to read more my him! 4y

First book down for the #bookfitnesschallenge!

I love all of Willy Vlautin‘s books, but be warned that all of them will make you cry. They‘re all about good people in seemingly hopeless situations, but it‘s worth seeing it through to the end every time.
“I know we‘re all tired. But the main thing to do when you‘re tired is to remember to be nice. Remember to be kind...”

alisiakae I like that quote. 😊 6y

Starting this tonight. How do people who don‘t read even enjoy life? 😂🤓🤓🤓

britt_brooke I often wonder this myself. 😆 7y
xicanti A coworker once told me he hadn't read a book in probably ten years and I didn't even know what to say to him. Another coworker and I ended up speculating about what he even did with his time if he wasn't a reader. 7y
AmyG What do these people even DO with themselves? 😳 @xicanti Right? (edited) 7y
Eggs Busy watching tv/video games? 7y
peacegypsy @xicanti @AmyG @Eggs @britt_brooke It‘s one of the unanswerable questions of the universe. How can you not read? 😳 (edited) 7y

This seems like it will be depressing and heartbreaking. Sure, why not? Let's read this next.

haileybean I feel like that's how I'm going to be going in to February picking books. "This looks like it's going to wrench out my heart and beat it to a pulp; let's read it now!" 8y
RanaElizabeth @haileyhugsbooks I know, right? Like we somehow need to reading a cathartic book? 8y
haileybean I think I'm afraid my boss is going to come to work in the morning and my book will be in the corner, thinking about what it did to evoke such an emotional state, and I'm going to be red faced and puffy - eyed. 😅I think a catharsis at the pages of a book is the way to go. The timing seems perfect. 8y
RanaElizabeth @haileyhugsbooks Crying because of what is happening in a book sounds better than crying about what's happening in the real world, because I am sick to freaking death of doing that. 8y
haileybean Me too. At least this way I can say "It's the book!" and not the news. 8y

Love the tenderness between the characters. Yes, when having a crap day, be kind to yourself. Great advice.

This book made me tear-up more than once. Such tender characters. On a train, hence the blur.

My father-in-law lent me this a while ago. I've had Bookclub books log-jamming my tbr pile but I've cast one aside for something different and this certainly fits the bill. Am loving it so far.
