The Blue Jay's Dance
The Blue Jay's Dance: A Memoir of Early Motherhood | Louise Erdrich
7 posts | 10 read | 15 to read
Louise Erdrich's first major work of nonfiction, The Blue Jay's Dance, brilliantly and poignantly examines the joys and frustrations, the compromises and the insights, and the difficult struggles and profound emotional satisfactions the acclaimed author experienced in the course of one twelvemonth periodfrom a winter pregnancy through a spring and summer of new motherhood to her return to writing in the fall. In exquisitely lyrical prose, Erdrich illuminates afresh the large and small events that every parent will recognize and appreciate.

Finished this for #AuthoraMonth. I couldn't decide on which of her fiction to start with, so I figured I'd start with this instead. I had never heard of it, and I really enjoy nonfiction. This was beautiful, and really made me miss my mom! Er...she lives in a different state, is all. Anyway, very much enjoyed this quick memoir. It also has a #leaf and #someonesback on the cover for #ISpyBingo.

A beautiful meditation on motherhood by one of my favorite authors. My go-to gift for expecting friends and family.

This was beautifully written. No other way to put it. I enjoyed her essays about the first year of her youngest child‘s life and explorations of motherhood and womanhood.

I have been absent for a while - a product of burn out at work but also the tiredness of first trimester. Books and reading have not been as appealing to me lately for those same reasons. I‘m taking some time to regroup and heal mentally and dove into this last night. I love it. (And, yes, I‘m one of those monsters that underlines in books 😊) 💜

Alfoster You go girl! Whatever you need😍!👏👏 7y
tracy.anne8 Im currently pregnant with twins and I was the same way my first trimester. No interest in reading and completly exhausted. That fatigue is no joke and no one understands it until they experience it. Definitely take the time you need right now. The great thing about books is they will be there when you come back to them.😊 7y
stargazerblue49 @tracy_anne8 Congrats on the twins! I didn‘t realize I could be more tired than I already was as a resident doctor, but I‘m sure that I‘ll find out more about being tired in the coming months! 😂 7y
tracy.anne8 @stargazerblue49 Oh my you are busy! Naps! 😆I recommend lots of naps if possible! 7y
stargazerblue49 @tracy_anne8 I try, but naps usually get me into trouble when I try to sleep at night! One day, I‘ll figure it out! 7y

Perhaps we owe some of our most moving literature to men who didn't understand that they wanted to be women nursing babies.
