The Peculiar Life of a Lonely Postman
The Peculiar Life of a Lonely Postman | Denis Thériault
Bilodo lives a solitary daily life, routinely completing his post round every day and returning to his empty Montreal apartment. But he has found a way to break the cycle - Bilodo has taken to stealing people's mail, steaming open the envelopes and reading the letters inside. And so it is he comes across Segolene's letters. She is corresponding with Gaston, a master poet, and their letters are each composed of only three lines. They are writing each other haikus. The simplicity and elegance of their poems move Bilado and he begins to fall in love with her. But one day, out on his round, he witnesses a terrible and tragic accident. Just as Gaston is walking up to the post-box to mail his next haiku to Segolene, he is hit by a car and dies on the side of the road. And so Bilodo makes an extraordinary decision - he will impersonate Gaston and continue to write to Segolene under this guise. But how long can the deception continue for?

I read this book years ago, but I still remember the weird (and super creepy!) postman from Montreal.. And I love haikus.

A lot more sinister than I was expecting! It‘s a wonderful story, full of surprises and it it has a very satisfying structure. The ending will haunt me, in the way all good endings must. It‘s a peculiar little book-definitely worth your time!

Good morning, book mail (and knitting mail and crochet mail and something nice for my flat). The postman rang twice before 8 a.m. - of course had I made plans to sleep in today. 😖 Doesn't matter: #bookmail

PS: the book tagged sounds interesting, will put it onto my ginormous TBR.

Michelle_mck Oooo book and knit mail the best! 7y

A postman who lives vicariously through reading the private letters of others falls obsessively in love with a far away woman who corresponds only through haiku. A short novel that is quirky, tragicomic and passionate, and taught me a lot about Japanese poetry! Originally in French (Canadian) but excellently translated into English. Recommended.

"So this was how we departed this world, Bilodo reflected: by accident, without making waves or leaving a lingering trail, like a swallow flashing across the sky, and as quickly forgotten as a squirrel inadvertently run over on the road."

What a beautiful, short obscure novel. It focuses a lot on haiku, the writing and interpreting of them. I found the ending fascinating, although left a little undone, so I'm glad there's a sequel.

MyBookBath I always wonder about the life of my postman. ✉ï¸ðŸ’ŒðŸ¤” 8y
HotCocoaReads Hahaha, well, this one opens up mail and falls in love with the writer of some of the letters--which would be creepy if it wasn't so beautiful! 😂 8y
thebooksatchel That is interesting. I have been curious about post men in general 8y
Thebookharlot A postman that opens the mail? It does sound creepy, but good too! 8y

#marchintoreading Day 27
This is the first novel that came to my mind for #CanadianAuthors

I picked this ebook just for the cover, so simple but I think it's beautiful!
This is a short novel about a lonely (and very creepy, in my opinion) postman that steals some letters and falls in love with a woman by reading her haiku poems. The ending is.. weird!

What I'm reading while my son works on pole vault. Too bad I missed getting him in this picture!

SaraFair My sons are starting track this week too. No pole vaulting in this area though. 8y
BookNAround @SaraFair The pole vault thing confounds me. On the plus side, not too many people do it so if he ends up any good (he's only a freshman and just learning it), we could be looking at college scholarships. 8y
SaraFair @BookNAround - Woo hoo! Worth it! 8y
SharonDuerst Lots of time watching and waiting with kids and spouses in sports! My husband, son, and daughter were pole vaulters! I've watched women in their 70's do it...would like to say I have it in me, too! Maybe...maybe not...😠8y

Well, this didn't really work for me. Focus should be on the word peculiar. Starts out quirky, ends like faux Murakami.

Suet624 I like the title though. 8y

#24in48 #readathon Book #9. I enjoyed this lovely little book ... to a point. But, the plot jumped the shark and the ending wasn't satisfying for me. At its best, reminiscent of Antoine Laurain. #LibraryThing #Earlyreaders

This book is sprinkled with beautiful Japanese haiku, an added bonus for readers who love haikus and its related forms of poetry. But the star is the story and the writing - a lovely tale, exudes simplicity yet weaves poignant themes, and the ending really surprised me! I will say no more. Read it:)
