From the NYT bestselling author of The Fifth Season comes a rich, original fantasy about a king gone mad with power in a world where magic is harvested from dreams. In the ancient city-state of Gujaareh, peace is the only law. Upon its rooftops and amongst the shadows of its cobbled streets wait the Gatherers -- the keepers of this peace. Priests of the dream-goddess, their duty is to harvest the magic of the sleeping mind and use it to heal, soothe . . . and kill those judged corrupt. But when a conspiracy blooms within Gujaareh's great temple, Ehiru -- the most famous of the city's Gatherers -- must question everything he knows. Someone, or something, is murdering dreamers in the goddess' name, stalking its prey both in Gujaareh's alleys and the realm of dreams. Ehiru must now protect the woman he was sent to kill -- or watch the city be devoured by war and forbidden magic. The Dreamblood Duology is an omnibus edition that includes The Killing Moon and The Shadowed Sun.For more by N.K. Overall really good. Fast moving and creative stories, very interesting mythology and fantastic world building per usual. CW: graphic depictions of sexual violence (especially in book 2) almost ruined this one for me but I ended up being glad I stuck with it.

I loved this duology! The world-building was fantastic, the characters were complex and sympathetic, and there was plenty of action mingled with intimate moments and magic. It also broke my heart several times. The way she describes emotions has you feeling those emotions along with the characters. The ending wasn't rushed and there was a sense of closure, but the characters had to work for it. I'm kind of sad that it's over.

emz711 I haven't done it yet, better than Broken Earth? 4y
jen_the_scribe @emz711 I haven't read Broken Earth yet, but this was amazing. 4y

Took my kids to a not-crowded beach, our first outing since March. Everyone was social distancing, so no problems there. And it was so nice. My kids and I chased little fish, observed clams digging in the sand, collected seashells, built sand castles, had a picnic, and enjoyed the water. While my mom played with them, I even got to read a chapter under the sun. We really needed this.

Found a mistake in this book. Charris is the character in this scene, and (SPOILER ALERT), the character Niyes is dead.

I've had this one on my shelf for a while. I got it from a little used bookstore in my area a while back, but you know how it goes. You get more books that you're more excited about in the moment and end up reading other things. But now I'm really in the mood for some epic fantasy, so I'm excited to finally tackle this one. This duology includes The Killing Moon and The Shadowed Sun.

Uggghhh. I really like these big chunky omnibuses of N.K. Jemisin‘s previous work. I knew I should have bought it when I saw it in St. Louis but I bought the Inheritance Trilogy omnibus instead. This woman is rocking Sci-Fi/Fantasy right now. Why did this book go out of print?

Thankfully it is a way cheaper on Amazon but I prefer new editions. Guess I‘m now on the hunt!

Soubhiville Wow, that‘s a steep price! 6y
Geeklet @Soubhiville Right? It‘s nuts. It‘s only like $30 on Amazon but that‘s for a used copy as well. I feel like I‘ve seen it recently somewhere so I‘ll hunt around for awhile before I get the one on Amazon. It‘s just weird it‘s out of print. The author just won three Hugo‘s back to back to back. I figured I‘d be able to get a new copy. 6y
Soubhiville Yeah it seems like you would be able to find it somewhere! 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego That's expensive. I agree about NK Jemisin though. She's amazing. 6y
Geeklet @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I loved the Broken Earth trilogy so much. I need to read the Inheritance trilogy but...uh...that large beautiful omnibus that I love is intimidating. It looks great on a shelf though! 5y

Interesting world building that spins off from Ancient Egyptian mythology but not obviously so. Not sure how I feel about the Gatherers.

Happy Saturday reading, Littens!

I had gotten a bottle of sparkling for New Years, but in true form, fell asleep before I could open it. Which just means a lazy Saturday of mimosas and reading.

Since my husband decided that he actually wants to read "We Were Eight Years In Power" like I suggested in the first place, I'm pushing it back in the queue and starting this while I wait for my weekly Makenna injection.

Dear Husband and The Kid also got a couple of things from BAM! today. He honestly has no idea what he's in for with NK Jemisin. I'm excited he asked for it because I've been wanting to read this one! My daughter picked the Shoppies book for herself and eventually helped shop for her match. Those goodies are in the bag. #winwin #bookhaul #jryulebookswap

Went out wandering while visiting my in-laws, found an indy bookstore, and scored the last Jemisin series I haven't read. No complaints today.
