Burning of Bridget Cleary: A True Story
Burning of Bridget Cleary: A True Story | Angela Bourke
8 posts | 6 read | 37 to read
In 1895, Bridget Cleary, a strong-minded and independent young woman, disappeared from her house in rural Tipperary. At first her family claimed she had been taken by fairies-but then her badly burned body was found in a shallow grave. Bridget's husband, father, aunt, and four cousins were arrested and tried for murder, creating one of the first mass media sensations in Ireland and England as people tried to make sense of what had happened. Meanwhile, Tory newspapers in Ireland and Britain seized on the scandal to discredit the cause of Home Rule, playing on lingering fears of a savage Irish peasantry. Combining historical detective work, acute social analysis, and meticulous original scholarship, Angela Bourke investigates Bridget's murder.

2.5 Stars • The Burning of Bridget Cleary by Angela Bourke is a historical account of a tragic event in 1895 Ireland. Bridget Cleary, a young woman, was killed by her husband and family members who believed she was a changeling, a fairy imposter. The incident sparked public outrage and was used to highlight the superstitions prevalent in rural Ireland at the time.

In 1895 Ireland, her family claimed Bridget had been taken away by fairies until her burnt body was found in a shallow grave. Four of her family members were charged with her murder that resulted when they tried to banish the fairies from her.

emilyhaldi Those crazy fairies!! 🧚🏻‍♂️🧚🏼‍♀️ 6y
Reviewsbylola This is on my TBR but I‘m concerned about the fairies. 6y
Mdargusch The Irish culture just explained away anything that they didn‘t understand by saying that the fairies were responsible. @Reviewsbylola it‘s actually very fascinating and they refused to believe modern day science. It‘s an interesting historical true crime. (edited) 6y

I decided to start off the month of October with this creepy true crime story. It takes place in Ireland in 1895 and there‘s lots of talk about witches, spells and fairies.

#Burn

This book (on my “historic true crime” shelf 😄) tells of the 1895 disappearance of an Irish woman who was believed to be taken by the fairies - until her burned remains were discovered and her family was charged with murder. I‘ve heard that Hannah Kent recommends this in the endnotes to her novel, The Good People.

Soooo, I'm a little late with this prompt. I wasn't sure what to do with #whenthedovescry but I bet there was a lot of crying in this relationship. At the end of The Good People, Hannah Kent recommends this book, the awful tale of a woman who disappears from her home, and whose family claims she was taken by fairies. Her burnt body is later discovered and her husband is arrested and tried for murder.

Cinfhen Sounds fascinating and I can't wait to read 8y
Reggie Sounds intense. 8y

So stoked my copy of this has turned up. In her acknowledgements at the end of The Good People, Hannah Kent recommends this book, as a real life example of what happened in her book. I find this fascinating (and feel badly for poor Bridget)
