2.5 Stars • The Burning of Bridget Cleary by Angela Bourke is a historical account of a tragic event in 1895 Ireland. Bridget Cleary, a young woman, was killed by her husband and family members who believed she was a changeling, a fairy imposter. The incident sparked public outrage and was used to highlight the superstitions prevalent in rural Ireland at the time.

In 1895 Ireland, her family claimed Bridget had been taken away by fairies until her burnt body was found in a shallow grave. Four of her family members were charged with her murder that resulted when they tried to banish the fairies from her.

I decided to start off the month of October with this creepy true crime story. It takes place in Ireland in 1895 and there‘s lots of talk about witches, spells and fairies.

This book (on my “historic true crime” shelf 😄) tells of the 1895 disappearance of an Irish woman who was believed to be taken by the fairies - until her burned remains were discovered and her family was charged with murder. I‘ve heard that Hannah Kent recommends this in the endnotes to her novel, The Good People.

Soooo, I'm a little late with this prompt. I wasn't sure what to do with #whenthedovescry but I bet there was a lot of crying in this relationship. At the end of The Good People, Hannah Kent recommends this book, the awful tale of a woman who disappears from her home, and whose family claims she was taken by fairies. Her burnt body is later discovered and her husband is arrested and tried for murder.

So stoked my copy of this has turned up. In her acknowledgements at the end of The Good People, Hannah Kent recommends this book, as a real life example of what happened in her book. I find this fascinating (and feel badly for poor Bridget)
