The Testament of Gideon Mack
The Testament of Gideon Mack | James Robertson
A critical success on both sides of the Atlantic, this darkly imaginative novel from Scottish author James Robertson takes a tantalizing trip into the spiritual by way of a haunting paranormal mystery. When Reverend Gideon Mack, a good minister despite his atheism, tumbles into a deep ravine called the Black Jaws, he is presumed dead. Three days later, however, he emerges bruised but alive-and insistent that his rescuer was Satan himself. Against the background of an incredulous world, Mack's disturbing odyssey and the tortuous life that led to it create a mesmerizing meditation on faith, mortality, and the power of the unknown.

Getting some outside time in this unseasonably warm weather. A week ago we had some snow....today I'm in flip flops.

Some of my favorite days are the mornings I wake up early with nowhere to go and am able to curl up with a good book and a hot coffee... Started this one yesterday. Found it in a used book warehouse on vacation not long ago.

#seasonsreadings2016 #silhouettesoncovers This has been on my TBR for a few years! I really need to read at least one of his books next year. I have been so busy I haven't read at all today...wrapping a few more then an early night with my book 💕

Jhullie I spy a Terry's Chocolate Orange. My Mum gives me one every Christmas as a tribute to her own childhood, wartime Christmases when she was excited to get a REAL orange in her stocking❣🍊 8y
DeborahSmall @Jhullie My husband and eldest get one every year in their stocking, my 2 youngest get the Toblerone's. My dad always put an apple and a few tangerines! In all our stockings as that's what he and his brothers got 😊💕 8y

Robertson is able to pull off a mixture of love, magic realism, religious ideology, and excellent character development. I recommend for anyone who loves unreliable narrators.

It's been pretty busy with school work and beginning preparations for my teacher placement. I'm halfway though the book and I'm excited to finish soon! Right now I'm thinking about Halloween haha #witchy #dogsoflitsy

These are my #ScaryReads on my bookshelf! Most of these are read and feature some spooky theme. Roy Porter presents an overview of medical history and looks at agriculture all the way to vaccinations. Currently working on The Testament of Gideon Mack which may be considered a scary read because it has the devil in it. #JackSkellington #NightmareBeforeChristmasIsAHalloweenMovie #GiveAScaryBook #AllHallowsRead #Booktober

I saw this book #recommended on a BuzzFeed article about underrated books. I don't know why books with a religious theme appeal to me (as I'm an atheist) but I love unreliable narrators and this cover is gorgeous. So I'll read this instead of the 4 remaining books for my readharder challenge.

Despite my professed preference for facts, evidence and logical argument, I have always found giant leaps of imagination, which are akin to faith, exhilarating.
