The Galaxy Game
The Galaxy Game | Karen Lord
6 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR • Karen Lord is one of today’s most brilliant young talents. Her science fiction, like that of predecessors Ursula K. Le Guin and China Miéville, combines star-spanning plots, deeply felt characters, and incisive social commentary. With The Galaxy Game, Lord presents a gripping adventure that showcases her dazzling imagination as never before. On the verge of adulthood, Rafi attends the Lyceum, a school for the psionically gifted. Rafi possesses mental abilities that might benefit people . . . or control them. Some wish to help Rafi wield his powers responsibly; others see him as a threat to be contained. Rafi’s only freedom at the Lyceum is Wallrunning: a game of speed and agility played on vast vertical surfaces riddled with variable gravity fields. Serendipity and Ntenman are also students at the Lyceum, but unlike Rafi they come from communities where such abilities are valued. Serendipity finds the Lyceum as much a prison as a school, and she yearns for a meaningful life beyond its gates. Ntenman, with his quick tongue, quicker mind, and a willingness to bend if not break the rules, has no problem fitting in. But he too has his reasons for wanting to escape. Now the three friends are about to experience a moment of violent change as seething tensions between rival star-faring civilizations come to a head. For Serendipity, it will challenge her ideas of community and self. For Ntenman, it will open new opportunities and new dangers. And for Rafi, given a chance to train with some of the best Wallrunners in the galaxy, it will lead to the discovery that there is more to Wallrunning than he ever suspected . . . and more to himself than he ever dreamed. Praise for The Galaxy Game “There is a weight and grace to [Lord’s] prose that put me in mind of pewter jewelry.”—NPR “This novel is a satisfying exercise in being off-balance, a visceral lesson in how to fall forward and catch yourself in an amazing new place.”—The Seattle Times “A smart science fictional fable as inventive and involving as it is finally vital.”—Tor.com From the Trade Paperback edition.

Pickpick

Coming-of-age story in time of political upheaval, centered on the nephew of the MC of The Best of All Worlds. More planets, a wider scope, but once again character focused. Features a competitive team sport that's similar to parkour but with gravity that changes direction and strength. Ends with some loose ends that makes me think that the book longlisted for the #WomensPrize2024 is not really a standalone. Soft pick, hint of middle book syndrome

"They'll take their time," said Oesten. "Knock them off one by one."

"Fear and anticipation work in their favor. No one likes to operate in an environment of vague threat. Can you blame the remaining Academes from trying?"

#seasonsreadings2016 day #ereader
I became an ebook reader when my first child was born 5 years ago and leaving the house w a fussy newborn was difficult. I loved how I could easily borrow ebooks from the library on my devices. I read on my phone, my Kindle Paperwhite (mostly classics) and my beloved Nexus 7 (which is an excellent size for e-reading)! Are you a fan of e-readers too?

DogMomIrene Even though I know I shouldn't use my iPad before winding down for the day, it makes reading in bed while my SO sleeps much much easier. I use the book nightlight sometimes, but it doesn't always work well. And I nod off A LOT in my middle age, so...batteries. 8y
CocoReads I still prefer paper but I confess, I tend to read more ebooks. Because I can always have a book with me, because I can read in bed without bothering the hub, and also the easy of buying or borrowing without leaving the house. 8y
dariazeoli I had the very first Nook and Nook Color, then moved on to my iPad. This year I bought a Kindle Paperwhite, which I use in conjunction with my iPad mini. Love, love, love the endless availability Overdrive gives me! 8y

[DELETED] 206653737 I love e-readers, that's what's gotten me back into reading after taking a few years off a while back. I'm a kindle fan, and have had several fires over the years. 8y
Amie I love my Kindle, especially because it makes it easy to always have lots of books with me anywhere I go! 8y
Sarah83 I'm of the old school. Yes I have an ereader but I do not use it. I work in an office and after staring the whole day on a monitor, I do not need it at home. I prefer books I can hold in my hand, I can turn over and (especially older books) smell. 😉 8y
Joybishoptx Love my ereaders. I have a bit of an addiction. A lifetime of reading has been hard on my eyes. It's just easier to read on an ereader. I love regular books too, but most of what I read is on an ereader. So easy to check books out from the library! 8y
Centique I never thought I'd be converted but reading on my kindle makes big hefty books so much easier. I can take it everywhere in my handbag. Travel with 150 reading options. And buy books in seconds. I still read traditional formats too but I LOVE my kindle 💕😊 8y
Blaire Yes, an ereader is much easier with kids especially. Nice to be able to read one-handed. 😊 8y
Ruri_kaichou Reading on an e-reader is a lot easier when you're nursing. I use my phone and Kindle all the time. 8y
ScrappyMags I said I would never ever ever because I love the aesthetic of a book until I got a Kindle as a present. Then I got a Fire. Now I want a paperwhite so badly !!! I love I can make the font bigger and thus no reading glasses, lightweight, can read in dark, lol. 💗💗 8y
Mc_cart_ny E-reading is great, I have a Kindle but I haven't used it in ages I read constantly on my phone. 8y
minkyb I'm pretty sure e-readers didn't exist during those years for me. I am glad it is a convenience now. It certainly makes traveling easier! 8y
Gina I so want to like to e-reader and have tried dozens of times to no avail. But I do adore downloading audio books from the library from Overdrive! Bonus I have gotten my non reading boyfriend to love them too. He cried at the last book we listened to together 8y
RealLifeReading @Gina it's not for everyone I know. And there's still nothing like turning actual pages! I am not much of an audiobook person myself prob cos I spend my time w my two little kids (edited) 8y
RealLifeReading @minkyb yes traveling with books is so convenient w a tablet!! @Mc_cart_ny I'm always amazed when people read on phones. I find it too small!! 8y
RealLifeReading @ScrappyMags oh yes reading in the dark is such a plus!! 🤓 8y
RealLifeReading @Ruri_kaichou @Blaire I'm definitely able to read more around my kids with the help of ebooks 8y
RealLifeReading @Centique great to see so many fellow ereader lovers here! 8y
RealLifeReading @Joybishoptx yes! I love that I can check out ebooks so easily. 8y
RealLifeReading @ocdIrene I often am awake before my husband so I tend to read on my phone before it's time for him to get up! 8y
RealLifeReading @CocoReads love the convenience of ebooks! 8y
Ruri_kaichou @RealLifeReading @Mc_cart_ny I find a phone too small as well! It's not enjoyable for me. I only read on my phone through Serial Reader. But reading is reading, especially with little ones! 8y
RealLifeReading @bookish22 I love how ereaders and ebooks have gotten people reading again! @amie yay Kindle! 8y
