SHORTLISTED FOR THE GUARDIAN FIRST BOOK AWARD 2015 SHORTLISTED FOR THE SUNDAY TIMES/PETERS FRASER & DUNLOP YOUNG WRITER OF THE YEAR AWARD LONGLISTED FOR THE BAILEYS WOMEN'S PRIZE FOR FICTION 2015 The Shore. A collection of small islands sticking out from the coast of Virginia into the Atlantic Ocean that has been home to generations of fierce and resilient women. Sanctuary to some but nightmare to others, its a place theyve inhabited, fled, and returned to for hundreds of years. From a brave girls determination to protect her younger sister as methamphetamine ravages their family, to a lesson in summoning storm clouds to help end a drought, these women struggle against domestic violence, savage wilderness, and the corrosive effects of poverty and addiction to secure a sense of well-being for themselves and for those they love. Their interconnecting stories form a deeply affecting legacy of two island families, illuminating the small miracles and miseries of a community of outsiders, and the bonds of blood and fate that connect them all. Dreamlike and yet impossibly real, profound and playful, The Shore is a richly unique, breathtakingly ambitious and accomplished debut novel by a young writer of astonishing gifts.

Lots of layered stories covering many generations all of which are compelling. They come together in a unique and satisfying way. Women‘s resilience and powers are as important as their vulnerability Very enjoyable

The Shore is a compilation of family members ' stories through generations just off the coast of Virginia. Each chapter is from a different decade.

I think this tacitly qualifies for the #bodiesofwater category of the #maybookflowers.

#upnext Anyone read this one? I was attracted to it precisely because of its nautical title, and really know nothing about it or the author

bookjam Just finished this. I got confused about the characters but managed to figure it out. Interesting book. The back and forth of years was really different as was character development. 7y

One of my favorite books set in a small town (set of islands) off of Virginia. This book includes unwanted pregnancies, methamphetamine, murder, dark magic, and the place they all call home. It weaves together so many different stories and points of view that when you realize they are connecting you are in to deep to understand how you got there. I still think about the ending of this. #mindblown #smalltown #photoadaynov16

Ashley_Nicoletto Plus the hardcover edition is gorgeousss. 8y

#booktober My only reread so far this year is Sara Taylor's The Shore. These interconnected short stories span centuries around a rural Oceanside town. They are very very raw and are hard to look away from. It's about poverty, drugs, a little magic, women. A favorite of all time and forever! @RealLifeReading

This is an outstanding collection of interconnected stories going back and forth through time as the planet is seemingly ending. Just absolutely brutal and beautiful. Perfect for fans of Margaret Atwood or David Mitchell. #Recommendsday

Mehso-so

I really didn't get the hype of this book. Nearly every one of my book blogger friends gave it a five star rating but about three quarters of the way in it took a turn and it was all downhill from there. Maybe I missed something, I don't know. But, The Shore just didn't do it for me.
