pickThis is the first book from Jorge Amado I read, and I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did.
It follows a year in a brazilian city in the cusp of modernity, with a focus on the love story between newly arrived Gabriela and Nacib, which is, honestly, so lovely.

pickI love getting lost in South America novels. Although this is the first I‘ve read in ages! Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Isabel Allende are two of my favourite authors. I‘ll have to add Jorge Amado to the list. This is a beautifully written novel full of politics, passion, humour and wonderful characters. I really liked it

so-soGabriela is one of the many characters who live in Ilheus, a Brazilian town developing quickly. The men in town are divided regarding the future. Some are very conservative, for others the changes can't go fast enough. When it comes to women however, all men think alike: women must be obedient and faithful.
I even suspect Amado himself of machismo-behaviour: the Gabriela he describes is, imo, not a real woman. She is a man's fantasy. #1001books

My favorite book of all time is written by Brazilian author Jorge Amado. It's about life in Northeastern Brazil as the modern world reaches it. It's also about a free spirit named Gabriela you can't help but fall in love with. 💕💕💕
