I read these books when I was younger, and I'm just now rereading them as something to do during this pandemic. I love these books. I always thought as someone with asthma how amazing it would be to be someplace where all that disappeared. I think the characters are great, and the story fast and engaging. I would definitely recommend it!

So far I have liked this book. The main character is Arthur Penhaligon. He is asthmatic and is chosen by a mysterious figure to die an early death to complete a prophecy. But, he doesn't die when he was thought to. Then, the figure sets out to retrieve a powerful item that has been given to Arthur. Arthur has to prevent the figure from getting the item and has to bring it to a certain place. I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes fantasy.

My 11 year old's original #readathon plan was to finish that stack on the left, all books that she has already started. But I've been reading The Keys to the Kingdom to both kids, and we recommended the series to one of her best friends. He became obsessed, and was quickly ahead of us in the series. So now she's spending @DeweysReadathon doing competitive reading to finish the series before him. 🙄😂 Sir Thursday is missing from the pic as it's ⬇️

Leniverse (cont.) in her school bag, so she can read on at school. Vol 2 of The Promised Neverland in front there is my readathon surprise for her, and I'm pretty sure it's one of the few things that could tear her away from her contest. 😂 7y

I‘m listening to this series through Libby. I usually listen to nonfiction, but thought I‘d try this one because it‘s rather short. Wish me luck!

I'm wiped out from back to school shopping with the kids. Who said school uniforms were easier? They're not! Fortunately I managed to nab a Garth Nix book from a charity shop in passing. 50p! Now gonna read and roast in the sun (why did I put jeans on? Why?! ?) while the kids play in a massive "beach" sandpit they've installed at the town shopping. Then ice cream. Definitely ice cream.

CocoReads I never enjoyed the uniform years either (grades 5-8 for mine). Luckily they went to a performing arts magnet high school so every time uniforms were brought up, it was voted down. 7y
rockpools ☀️? 🍦? Have you moved to a different country, or has Autumn just hit us early down here? 🍂 ☔️ 7y
Leniverse @RachelO Still in Wales. 🙂It's allegedly only 19 degrees in the shade, but the sun is hot enough! 7y

Leniverse @CocoReads I guess I don't mind the uniform so much, but some of the finicky rules. My daughter can have grey or white socks (not black), my son can have grey or black (not white). Shoes that meet the standards (and don't kill their feet) are extra tricky. I should buy the same shoes in three different sizes so we don't have to do this again later in the year! 😜 7y
CocoReads That was our problem too. There were guidelines but every teacher had their own interpretation. Once kristin was told her khakis were too light. But she'd gotten them from a student the year before. One year button ups were fine, the next year they weren't, one year yellow polos were fine, the next year they weren't. The blue ones were fine but the acceptable but the shade had to be just right. 7y
CocoReads I was annoyed the entire 4 years. 7y
Leniverse @CocoReads Urk. Yes. Mine are still just in infants and juniors. I know the uniform code is going to get ridiculously strict for my daughter next year, when she starts high school. 😖In June during the heatwave the head teacher grudgingly allowed students to go without their blazers, but not undo their top shirt button. (Teachers wore sandals and tees. 🙄) 7y
Leniverse @RachelO We got drenched by a sudden switch in the weather and opted for fresh doughnuts instead of ice cream. 😆 Still felt like a heavy summer shower and not like autumn. (I'll be clinging to the sense of summer until we approach Halloween 😂) 7y
CocoReads @Leniverse very frustrating. I always maintained that I was theoretically fine with uniforms but that we should do it like the parochial schools. Everyone orders from the same catalog. Then, there would be no confusion. But I also understood why we didn't. It would cost more and we have so very many poor families in our public schools. 7y
CocoReads And while I was technically ok with uniforms, I made my 80s liberal non conformist heart scream inside. Where's the freedom of expression? Why look like everyone else? Having said that-I'm actually not Cyndi Lauper like at all. But I want the freedom to be a little crazy when I want to be. 7y
Leniverse @CocoReads Yeah, here too. A high percentage of kids here qualify for free school lunches. That means they really can't afford expensive school gear. We have a specific school sweater/blazer, but everything else is bought wherever. 7y
Leniverse @CocoReads And yes, uniforms go against the grain for me too. 😂 But I do see some benefits to it. 7y

I've been eyeballing this series in my library since this summer and finally decided to give it a try. It's my first Garth Nix and I really enjoyed it and can't wait to pick up the next one!

rubyslippersreads The cover matches your cat beautifully. 😺❤️ 8y
hufflepuff_librarian @rubyslippersreads That was not intentional either! Notice the rug in the background also matches her. It's like playing Where's Waldo with her sometimes! 😹 8y

*complete set happy dance*

They no longer fit in the same spot on my bookshelf but that's a minor detail...

I may have to rearrange everything 🤔

stargazerblue49 I never finished this series, but I did really love the first couple of books! Hmmm, maybe should add to my TBR pile 😊 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I found them just as the last book was being released @stargazerblue49 - which is ideal - as waiting for the next bookish instalment of a series is hell. 8y
stargazerblue49 @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Agreed! Nix was on my radar after I read Shadow's Children and I picked up the first one when it came out. Probably the waiting is why I didn't keep up with it! 8y

I was going to use Born on a Tuesday for the "title with day of week" square (thanks @BestOfFates) but Mister Monday has been on my TBR for ages and was available for immediate download.

Entertaining. Loved the literary allusions: Arthurian legend, Prometheus, Pied Piper.
That's the speculative fiction square done.
