One of Nevil Shutes most exciting novels, Pied Piper is the gripping story of one elderly man's daring attempt to rescue a group of children during the Nazi invasion of France.It is the spring of 1940 and John Sidney Howard wants nothing more than to enjoy his fishing holiday in southern France in peace and quiet. However, the Nazi conquest of the Low Countries puts an end to that, and he is asked by friends to take their two children back to England. Crossing France with his young charges seems simple enough at firstuntil the Germans invade, rendering them fugitives. As Howard struggles to sneak across France, he picks up several more helpless children of various nationalities. They walk for miles in an endless river of refugees, strafed by German planes and hiding in barns at night. These will definitely be the last Nevil Shute books I read. Pied Piper isn‘t as bad as the last one in terms of racism and terminology, still a bit white savior-y for me.
An Old Captivity is definitely a skip. He‘s back to all of his racism and sexism, but with a bit of a magical realism twist I wasn‘t expecting from him.
He‘s still going to be a no for me.

Nice simple prose yet detailed story.
I truly like Shute's writing and am enjoying this story of an older chap who rescues a motley crew of children whilst on holiday in France in 1940.

KCofKaysville I liked this old book quite a bit. I've like his A Town Like Alice or whatever the original title was. He also wrote On the Beach, but I've only seen the film. 4y

Definitely an #OldFavorite, this was the first Nevil Shute book I read (borrowed from the school library). An elderly Englishman has to escape France ahead of the German advance early in the Second World War. He agrees to take an acquaintance's children with him, and in the course of their journey more children join the group. #31bookpics

CarolynM @Ruthiella I read quite a few years ago and enjoyed them a lot. I'm not sure what I'd think now. They were old fashioned then, I suspect they'd seem even more dated today. 6y
Ruthiella On The Beach held up I think. I only read it a couple of years ago. I just had to think of it as alternative history since there was no nuclear holocaust in the 1960s😀 6y
