Montaigne's Essays (I'm reading the chapter on friendship right now), sofa, multicolored tortoise.

Typically, all screens are off by the time #Hyggehour starts so I don't usually post, but I'm on holiday at the moment and on a more relaxed schedule 🌞

Montaigne is not necessarily eccentric. What I found appealing in his writings is a certain spontaneity, or indifference, that makes his thought seem devoid of vanity or pretence. But at some level, I always thought the eruditeness was a bit unnatural. There aren't really any clear lessons in the book, but rather it is an experience, in which you are constantly amazed by the learning he has. The joy comes from the amount of satisfaction HE gets.

Pickpick

"To begin depriving death of its greatest advantage over us, let us adopt a way clean contrary to that common one; let us deprive death of its strangeness, let us frequent it, let us get used to it; let us have nothing more often in mind than death... We do not know where death awaits us: so let us wait for it everywhere."
"To practice death is to practice freedom. A man who has learned how to die has unlearned how to be a slave."

“Fortune does us neither good nor harm; she only offers us the material and the seed of them, which our soul, more powerful than she, turns and applies as it pleases, sole cause and mistress of its happy or unhappy condition.”

@Daisey thank you so much for the delicious tea!

Tamra Love this collection - going to dip in & out long after I finish up my summer course. 😄 5y
Faibka @Tamra I‘m loving it! Are you doing a course on it? There‘s so much deep and yet practical wisdom in what I‘ve read so far. Like in other section, I found myself thinking I can‘t believe I‘m getting some very reasonable financial advice from a guy who lived 500 years ago! Lol 5y
Tamra @Faibka I‘m taking a Renaissance Lit course and we covered several of his essays. I‘m writing my research paper on his relative human/animal status from Apology for Raymond Sebond. 😸 5y
Daisey So glad to hear you enjoyed it! 5y

Strange combo this morning: Tom Yum soup & “Of Wearing Clothes” by Montaigne. 😏

I have to say, I‘m enjoying Montaigne‘s musings.

This essay “ Of Books” isn‘t assigned, but which one of us wouldn‘t open to it immediately? I will have to mark and come back to it!

My reading buddy this morning. I‘m venturing into Montaigne this week for my class. I‘m sure I‘ll enjoy him better than Machiavelli. 🤞🏾🐝

On my bucket list, for years I‘ve wanted to get to this book and recently I found this beautiful French edition so my challenge will be to try to read them in the original language as much as a can, aided by the English translation. It will probably take me a year or more but I‘m in no hurry to enjoy each paragraph of this author that has inspired so many great thinkers.
Do you have a book you‘ve always wanted to read and haven‘t got to yet?

I just finished a book last week where the author quoted du Montaigne many times. So, this seemed fitting for today‘s #tolerance prompt. Despite the heavy topic, I went with some lighthearted graphics for the idea of barbarous people. #pirates #quotsynov17

kim.guernsey That quote is pretty amazing. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @kim.guernsey Thanks. I thought so too! 7y
SauerPatch Was it A Gentleman in Moscow? I'd never have recognized the Montaigne name if not for that book. 🙂 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @SauerPatch No it wasn‘t, although that‘s on my TBR. It was 7y
