I thought the writing style was going to bother me. But it reads a lot like a play, so I did okay with it. It was a funny and entertaining story. And now I need to find the movie.

Short, funny novel that transported me back to the ‘80s. Jimmy and his mates decide to start a soul band in Dublin, but they need band members and need to teach them soul music. Novel features several colorful characters and snappy, hilarious dialog. Never saw the film but had the outstanding soundtrack. https://cannonballread.com/2020/08/the-commitments-elcicco/

A novel, a film, and a soundtrack that tells the story of a group of unemployed young people in the north side of Dublin, Ireland, who start a soul band. I may still have the CD! Among the songs Mustang Sally, Take me to the River, Chain of Fools, Try a little Tenderness et al, you will find a familiar #melody that should make you #smile

I've got the flu, I'm bored, and I've been going through my TBR, looking at #booked2019 prompts. I have been putting together a list for spring and I thought: what is it with books with musicians in them? I've read 3 this winter (The Commitments, Eleanor Oliphant and just finishing The Noise of Time) and I still have at least 5 on my TBR (2 by Rose Tremain, 2 by Ishiguro and Visit from the Goon Squad.) Could be a reading challenge in itself...

zsuzsanna_reads Just added to the musical novel TBR list: 6y
Kalalalatja Thanks for sharing! I was a little lost with this prompt 😅 6y
zsuzsanna_reads @Kalalalatja I know what you mean, I've no idea what to do about the social media prompt! 6y

zsuzsanna_reads There's also this list by bookriot https://bookriot.com/2018/07/05/books-about-music/ Then there's Phantom of the Opera and even the Discworld has a candidate in 6y
Cinfhen Here are a few suggestions for #socialmediafocus One of Us is Lying, Friend Request, Sympathy and I‘m going to read 6y

It took me a little while to get used to the writing style in this book (which is about 95% dialogue with an almost complete lack of narration) but when I did, this was fairly enjoyable. The dialogue is quick and witty and written as it would sound in a Dublin accent, so really there‘s no wonder it was made into a movie as the book is absolutely made for it!

#TenthAvenueFreezeOut tells the story of a band coming together, a band that forms from (and comes to represent) the working classes of America. Push that story across the Atlantic to Ireland and it sounds a lot like The Commitments to me.

A very fun quick read. Lots of energy and soul. Now to watch the movie!

CatLass007 It was a wonderful movie. 6y
Anton This is one of my absolute favourite movies, and from what I recall of the book it's a pretty faithful adaption. 6y

#heatofjuly #partyrockanthem

This was a memorable moment in my teens and Try a Little Tenderness was a bit of an anthem. I preferred it to Def Leppard and whatever else most of my friends were listening to! Read a couple of Roddy Doyle‘s books and enjoyed them - should read this one!

CarolynM Such a great film! 6y

Yes, I'm so old I still listen to CDs. Volume 1 is around the place somewhere...

Eggs I 💕💕💕 The Commitments!!! 7y
tournevis You're not old unless you own cassettes and/or LPs. I own both! 7y
CarolynM @tournevis I do own both of those things (too sentimental to get rid of them) but I don't have a working record player anymore and I'm pretty sure the cassettes are all dead. There's something about the physical embodiment of the music, don't you think? 7y
tournevis @CarolynM I understand. I'm nit married to physical media, but as a historian, I am very aware that LPs are the last permanent media we've produced. 7y

The movie adaptation was an important part of my childhood. I listened to the soundtrack endlessly. But sadly, my love of the story did not help me wade through the Irish slang.

I love Jimmy Rabbitte and his quest to become a #jukeboxhero or at least bring Soul to Barrytown. #characters2017

LibrarianRyan 👍🏻🤓 7y
Dogearedcopy I loved the book *and* the movie so much! I even went to see The Commitments on tour when they played a venue back East. At first, because Andrew Strong wasn't on the tour, I sulked and almost didn't let myself have a good time; but they were truly great live regardless! I still have an old cassette of the soundtrack (and a dnload edition from the early iPod days.) And I gobbled up the print and movie versions of 'The Snapper' and 'The Van'... 7y
Dogearedcopy (And yes, with the proper amount of alcohol, I have been known to sing #allthesongs 😄) 7y
Jas16 @Dogearedcopy That must have been a great show!! I love all the Barrytown books and don't think it would require too much alcohol for me to sing with you. Just earplugs for you because I have a terrible voice. 7y
Dogearedcopy @Jas16 LOL, we can be terrible together! 😄 7y
