I thought the writing style was going to bother me. But it reads a lot like a play, so I did okay with it. It was a funny and entertaining story. And now I need to find the movie.

Short, funny novel that transported me back to the ‘80s. Jimmy and his mates decide to start a soul band in Dublin, but they need band members and need to teach them soul music. Novel features several colorful characters and snappy, hilarious dialog. Never saw the film but had the outstanding soundtrack. https://cannonballread.com/2020/08/the-commitments-elcicco/
A novel, a film, and a soundtrack that tells the story of a group of unemployed young people in the north side of Dublin, Ireland, who start a soul band. I may still have the CD! Among the songs Mustang Sally, Take me to the River, Chain of Fools, Try a little Tenderness et al, you will find a familiar #melody that should make you #smile

Maybe not too much #DooWop but definitely lots of Mowtown and Northern Soul.... Such a fun book/ movie... I just loved the dialogue once I got used to it!
I've got the flu, I'm bored, and I've been going through my TBR, looking at #booked2019 prompts. I have been putting together a list for spring and I thought: what is it with books with musicians in them? I've read 3 this winter (The Commitments, Eleanor Oliphant and just finishing The Noise of Time) and I still have at least 5 on my TBR (2 by Rose Tremain, 2 by Ishiguro and Visit from the Goon Squad.) Could be a reading challenge in itself...
It took me a little while to get used to the writing style in this book (which is about 95% dialogue with an almost complete lack of narration) but when I did, this was fairly enjoyable. The dialogue is quick and witty and written as it would sound in a Dublin accent, so really there‘s no wonder it was made into a movie as the book is absolutely made for it!

#BOOKED2019 Set in Ireland/Irish author
#TenthAvenueFreezeOut tells the story of a band coming together, a band that forms from (and comes to represent) the working classes of America. Push that story across the Atlantic to Ireland and it sounds a lot like The Commitments to me.

A very fun quick read. Lots of energy and soul. Now to watch the movie!

This was a memorable moment in my teens and Try a Little Tenderness was a bit of an anthem. I preferred it to Def Leppard and whatever else most of my friends were listening to! Read a couple of Roddy Doyle‘s books and enjoyed them - should read this one!

Yes, I'm so old I still listen to CDs. Volume 1 is around the place somewhere...
The movie adaptation was an important part of my childhood. I listened to the soundtrack endlessly. But sadly, my love of the story did not help me wade through the Irish slang.
I love Jimmy Rabbitte and his quest to become a #jukeboxhero or at least bring Soul to Barrytown. #characters2017
