I, Coriander
I, Coriander | Sally Gardner
7 posts | 15 read | 12 to read
The story is told by Coriander, daughter of a silk merchant in 1650s London. Her idyllic childhood ends when her mother dies and her father goes away, leaving Coriander with her stepmother, a widow who is in cahoots with a fundamentalist Puritan preacher. She is shut away in a chest and left to die, but emerges into the fairy world from which her mother came, and where time has no meaning. When she returns, charged with a task that will transform her life, she is seventeen. This is a book filled with enchantments -- a pair of silver shoes, a fairy shadow, a prince transformed into a fox - that contrast with the heartbreaking loss and cruelty of Coriander's life in the real world. With its brilliantly realized setting of old London Bridge, and underpinned by the conflict between Royalists and Puritans, it is a terrific page turner, involving kidnapping, murder and romance, and an abundance of vivid characters. Coriander is a heroine to love. Her story will establish Sally Gardner as a children's writer of boundless imagination and originality.

Whooo a second bingo for #bookspinbingo
Unfortunately this book wasn‘t as great as I wanted it to be. It was okay but it would have a great chapter than a chapter that would draaaag. Ended abruptly and was just a little confusing at times thanks to the time gaps. A dark fairytale type story that‘s interesting but could have been better.

Ash.on.the.line Think I can finish one last book from this set! I‘m already making my list for November. Should post soon! 🤩 4y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 19 #bookstoread #tbrpile

kspenmoll No judgement! I have boxes of TBR books. 5y

Books I #lovetorecommend I, Coriander is a favourite YA I love recommending. I love Eva Luna from Allende, I've been reading The Prince of Tides for almost 25 years (since I was 15) and I'm always gifting it. Most recently my favourite read has been Natchez Burning and The Bone Tree, I'm so excited for the release of Mississippi Blood in April. I've recommended NB to anyone I know that reads. I know the series will always stay with me. 💕

rubyslippersreads I need to move I, Coriander up my TBR list. 8y
TrishB I have started the Greg Iles books due to recommendations on here 😀 they're great. 8y

Cinfhen I haven't read ANY of your recommendations 😕I need to read NB especially since I recommended it to my dad and he LOVED IT!!! 8y
LeahBergen I have had The Prince of Tides on my shelf for years and haven't read it ... and I've loved several of his other books. 😮 8y
Reecaspieces Love all of these! Greg Iles is my favorite! 8y
DeborahSmall @LeahBergen It's his best, I love it so much. @Cinfhen NB was my favourite read 2014 and The Bone Tree was just as good. I think the third has been released in US but we have to wait until April. @TrishB I'm hoping this trilogy within the series isn't the last Penn Cage as all the books have been great x 8y
DeborahSmall @rubyslippersreads it's a great book. The first YA I read after Harry Potter, another one I gift a lot. I have a lovely signed hardback copy 8y

Part 1 of 2 of my #collingswoodbookfestival haul. There was a tent with a deal of 5 books for $1, so I grabbed a bunch for my classroom library. Aside from "The Sweet Far Thing" (Don't worry, I have "A Great and Terrible Beauty" already. Need the third one, though) and "Crispin", I haven't read these. Littens, please tell me about these books before I unleash them on the children!

Carol Wrapped was great! Light on the romance, I believe she's crushing on someone, maybe a kiss? It's been a while since I read it but I remember it as a Regency/Victorian supernatural mystery of sorts. 8y
beaniebankbeth @Carol is it a take on Rapunzel? I'm getting that vibe from the cover. 8y
Carol @beaniebankbeth nooooo! It's about how mummy unwrapping a were a thing in Victorian times and at an unwrapping party k believe our heroine finds a charm or other object and then there's adventure...I am doing a bad job remembering the plot! I'll tag the book, where you can read the synopsis. I keep hoping the author will return to this world but so far, no luck. 8y
beaniebankbeth @Carol That sounds so much better than a fairy tale retelling, though I'm a fan of those too. Thanks for the tag. 8y

Pickpick

Ever since I was about eight years old, the beautifully eerie atmosphere of this twisted tale has equally enchanted and terrified me. The plot blends religion, fantasy and history through the the eyes of a child in a way that raises different questions at every stage of life in which you revisit it, and I know it is a book I will keep with me always

MrBook Great cover and pic! 8y
