Julianne Westcott was living the kind of life that other Protestant girls in prewar Liverpool could only dream about: old money, silk ball gowns, and prominent young men lining up to escort her. But when she learns of a blind-and-deaf brother, institutionalized since birth, the illusion of her perfect life and family shatters around her. While visiting her brother in secret, Julianne meets and befriends Kyle McCarthy, an Irish Catholic groundskeeper studying to become a priest. Caught between her family's expectations, Kyle's devotion to the church, and the intense new feelings that the forbidden courtship has awakened in her, Julianne must make a choice: uphold the life she's always known or follow the difficult path toward love. But as war ripples through the world and the Blitz decimates England, a tragic accident forces Julianne to leave everything behind and forge a new life built on lies she's told to protect the ones she loves. Now, after twenty years of hiding from her past, the truth finds her--will she be brave enough to face it?

I just finished the beautifully written book, about how love is lost then found again through forgiveness.

Should I fall out of love, my fire in the light
To chase a feather in the wind
Within the glow that weaves a cloak of delight
There moves a thread that has no end
For many hours and days that pass ever soon
The tides have caused the flame to dim
At last the arm is straight, the hand to the loom
Is this to end or just begin?

Enjoyable historical fiction - romantic and intriguing. Heads up: the ending jumps the shark, but it‘s still worth reading.

Discovering new to me authors had been one of the benefits of my Kindle Unlimited membership. I just finished this book, doing a mix of reading it or listening to it. This is the second book that I've read by Camille Di Maio. I preferred her "Before the Rain Falls" but did enjoy this as well.

I didn't have high expectations for this book because I got it as a kindle first book and I seem to be burned by those a lot lately. This book was so fantastic though. The way the author portrays the characters and history is just fabulous. If you're in the mood for a historical romance please read this...you won't regret it

This turned into a total hate-read, but maybe the fun kind. The writing is good and I stayed captivated, but the story and main character pissed me right the eff off LIKE WHOA. One lowly hateful star, with a mad face.

If you're looking for a book that will give you ALL the feels, this book is it. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll fall in love. You'll have your heart broken. This was definitely one of the BEST books that I've read this year, if not for all time! As an added bonus, if you're an Amazon Prime member you can read it for FREE! 😢😀😭😮👍📚

I put down the other book I was reading because I didn't want to read any thing else any more. It got all my focus. Sometimes you just want to read about a good old fashioned love story. I'm all finished now. 👍🏼👍🏼

Can't remember how I heard about this one. The story of a rich girl who falls in love with who her parents think is the wrong boy. WW II happens and life's plans go to crap. A story of acceptance, and what happens when you don't accept people as being 'good enough'. Or when one might not think they are 'good enough' themselves. People make some decisions in books that I just can't wrap my head around. As happens in life.

this was hands down one of the best books I have ever read. it made me feel the full spectrum of emotions. I felt like I connected with the characters and now that I am finished with the book I feel like I am putting a friend back on the shelf.

if this isn't already on your TBR list, it needs to be.

I can not say enough about this beautifully written novel. It's set in pre-war Liverpool and spans from the 30's to the 60's. It is a bittersweet love story with many surprises. Forbidden love, family pressure, unexpected decisions, war, religion, and so much more made this a 5 star read. Favorite.
