Personal History | Katharine Graham
An extraordinarily frank, honest, and generous book by one of America's most famous and admired women -- a book that is, as its title suggests, both personal and history. It is the story of Katherine Graham's parents: the multi-millionaire father who left private business and government service to buy and restore the down-and-out Washington Post; the aggressive, formidable, self-absorbed mother, known in her time for her political and welfare work, and her passionate friendships with men such as Thomas Mann and Adlai Stevenson.

Mehso-so

This was a fairly long audiobook, over 30 hours. Undoubtedly Katherine Graham had an illustrious life, spearheading The Washington Post especially through the Pentagon Papers and the Watergate scandal, and while this book was purely from her POV about some of the issues such as the union strikes, she comes off as fairly elitist overall to an outsider, but hey that‘s just my opinion!

Indeed, within the first months of my new working life, the color started returning to my face, my jaw was beginning to unclench, and what I had once called “my initial girl-#scout type of resolve” was turning into a passionate interest.

Lazy rainy Sunday on the couch with a book. The cat opted to lounge on the floor where she could watch the raindrops and listen to the sounds of it falling on the skylight. #WeAllJustGottaBeUs

Sharing the sand and surf with Katharine Graham. The pearls are a bit much for the beach, though. 🤔

Amabear Well pearls come from the ocean so 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣 I always wear pearls at the beach for photos 6y

Stopped by one of my favorite Friend‘s of the Library bookstores in Oakland today to renew my membership & take a quick gander at what they had in stock. Found my favorite book, 84 Charing Cross Road, which I always buy when I see it to give to friends, a Joan Didion book that I haven‘t read & the Katherine Graham autobiography, Personal History. We are reading this for my work feminist book club so I am thrilled that I found a good used copy.

The release of the film "The Post" finally motivated me to pick up Katharine Graham's memoir. Twenty years after its initial publication.

- Autobiographies ✅

Then you need to read this! Do not let the pearls fool you - she was not a dusty chick. She was amazing, brilliant and helped paved the way for us women who came behind her. #brave doesn't even begin to describe her ❤️ #augustgrrrl

SheReadsAndWrites I read this book years ago and LOVED it! ❤️ As a journalism major I found it so fascinating that she could just "hang out" with LBJ in his private room and talk to him. What journalist can do that?? It was such a different time, such a cool time to be in journalism, in my opinion. ? 7y

I have been reading this slowly, partly because it is a large book and not easily portable, but also because it is well written and fascinating. I really want to slow down reading this. Savor it I guess.

I learned so much from this memoir: mid-century American History, women in publishing, mental illness, etc. The companion volume is also a treat. Favorite non-fiction! #MOREORLESS

My girlfriend recommended this as a MUST READ when I mentioned I am going to try to read more non-fiction this year. As a native of Arlington (across the river from D.C.) I thought Katherine Graham is well known to me. Boy I was wrong. This is fascinating. I have just started this and already I am engrossed with her storytelling. #page24ofcurrentread #readjanuary

My favorite books are memoirs so it's incredibly tough for me to pick one #memorablememoirs

Although it's been awhile since I've read Graham's memoir, I remember really enjoying it. And because I also like books about strong women and family owned businesses, it seemed like a good pick to post here.

LauraBeth Nice memoir stack 😀 8y
ValerieAndBooks I love memoirs too (not the obviously badly ghost written teen idol type) and like you, also liked the Graham one! 8y

Loved this read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️She was born into wealth, always insecure and less than confident after being thrown into "a mans world" as CEO of the Post.
