A Confession
A Confession | Leo Tolstoy
This work marks the author's movement from the pursuit of aesthetic ideals toward matters of religious and philosophical consequence. The poignant text describes Tolstoy's heartfelt reexamination of Christian orthodoxy and subsequent spiritual awakening. Generations of readers have been inspired by this timeless account of one man's struggle for faith and meaning in life.

I got my new paperback a friend named Leo. He smells of black plum, persimmon and oak moss. 🌬🕯🕯

VioletBramble I bet that smells nice. I've got the Edgar Allen Poe library candle - cardamon, absynth, and sandalwood. 7y

My favorite this month is Confession by L.Tolstoy, and I love this book because it's a great insight into the thought process and feelings when you are dealing with depression, and interesting view on the meaning of life.

Suet624 Sounds right up my alley. 7y
Simona @Suet624 It's essay, a little bit heavy and primary It's his dealing with the religion and I read it, because it's a foundation for his literary works. 7y

Pickpick

This is important book for understanding his works -I agree, but I don't completely agree with his thinking, but hey, that's his confession and who I'm to judged his feelings ... except that -I think it's #sofar the best book I have read this year. An extraordinary insight into his thoughts about religion, family, depression, faith ... with a common starting point in the ultimate question -WHAT IS THE MEANING OF LIFE? Does anyone know the answer?

Leniverse I'm tempted to say 42, as I'm a Douglas Adams fan, but seriously... I don't agree that life is meaningless. I believe it to be inherently empty of meaning, and we have to fill it ourselves. Meaningless = negative, futile. Empty of meaning = can be filled, life is what you make of it. 7y
Simona @Leniverse His starting point is a midlife crisis and the abyss of depression ... and of course, I agree with you that we must find the meaning of life for ourselves by ourselves, and even Tolstoy ends his confession more upbeat like it seems from this quote.... and maybe 42 is the right answer 😉 7y

I'm not offended/upset because of these reasons, quite the opposite. I'm glad that he decided to write, but at the same time, I know that I'm going to read his works with a different attitude from now on.

To be honest this book felt pretty bleak, even after he came to some sort of faith. But it's Tolstoy, so at least it's well written! #audiobook
