Clean Room, Volume 1: Immaculate Conception
Clean Room, Volume 1: Immaculate Conception | Gail Simone
21 posts | 24 read | 22 to read
From the minds of superstar writer Gail Simone and gifted artist Jon Davis-Hunt comes CLEAN ROOM VOL. 1: IMMACULATE CONCEPTION a new vision of horror that takes you inside the locked chambers of sex, science, celebrity, and the supernatural. Somewhere between the realms of self-help and religion lies the Honest World Foundation. Its creator started out as an obscure writer of disposable horror fiction who decided to change the world one mind at a time. Now its adherents rule Hollywood while obeying their leader s every command. That s almost all that anyone knows about the movement or is it a cult? founded by reclusive guru Astrid Mueller. But reporter Chloe Pierce is sure that there s something deeper hiding behind Honest World s facade. Her fiance was a devoted follower of Mueller, right up to the moment that he blew his brains out while holding a copy of her book. Now Chloe wants answers from the woman whose words command the loyalty of millions and she s ready to storm the top-secret sanctuary known as the Clean Room to get them. But there s more to Astrid Mueller than Chloe could ever imagine and the truth that she s about to discover is more astonishing than any of Astrid s accomplishments, and more terrifying than any of her novels. Collects issues #1-6."

I‘ve been super busy recently and this is the only thing I‘ve managed to read in the last week 😳😭
This is definitely a horror comic so won‘t be for everyone.
Some parts were genuinely quite chilling and creepy to me and already have a few characters I‘m worried about.
So far in I‘m interested (I tend to read graphic novels as a whole for the series rather than judge individually unless one is particularly bad)

5/5

This was exactly what I want in a horror comic. There's a secretive cult, a slightly unreliable character, and incomprehensible, otherworldly monsters. It's suspenseful and psychological.

It's definitely not something everyone is going to enjoy, but I loved it, and there are three volumes on #hoopla!

Saving this stack (and yes, the Dunks gift card) for #letsgetgraphicweeklongmarathon. More to come tonight when The Boy picks up our subs from the comic book shop at FNM.

Continued from previous posts:

1) DC Rebirth Holiday. Collection of holiday specials from various big name characters. Some stories were super cute 😭
2) JL vs SS, see separate post
3) Bob's Burgers. I LOVE BOB'S BURGERS AND THAT IS ALL THANK U FOR LISTENING

4) Cleanroom v1. Folks. *amazeballs* story. Just as good as I thought it would be. Gail Simone writing a thriller (?) comic about a conspiracy. It's hard to explain. Just try it. 😱

Not for me. I don't have any issue with the story - demons or otherworldly beings wrecking havoc on Earth is always a good story. Unfortunately, the plot had too many holes in it, and a lot of sex and violence seemed to be thrown in solely for shock value and not for its relevance to the story.

I'm not a fan of horror and violent entities from other dimensions, but this comic series has enough of what I do like: interesting characters (especially strong women), an intriguing premise (mysterious self help/religious cult) and clear, dramatic artwork (by Jon Davis-Hunt). I picked it up last night to read the first issue before bed, but couldn't put it down until I'd finished the entire volume. Gail Simone is a great storyteller!

LectricSheep Yes please! 😀And it's on Hoopla! Hooray! (edited) 7y

Wow! I really enjoyed this comic. The story is really intriguing which made it hard to put down. It's also super creepy and weird which I love. Highly recommended and I can't wait to pick up the next volume.

I'm not sure, this is highly readable and if I had the next volume, I'd be reading it... but I also felt like I was playing catchup - the characters know more than I do 😕 much weirdness, questionable results.

A friend of mine just recently got me started reading graphic novels. This is the first one that I literally could not put down. The story draws you in immediately and keeps you wondering what's next. I'm definitely looking forward to volume two. A+

Simone's work has often felt forced or false off the bat, lately, and this is no exception. But as it digs into the cosmic horror underlying the book, Simone's bleakly comic feel for monster stories kicks in and the book picks up.
