Haruki Murakami and the Music of Words
Haruki Murakami and the Music of Words | Jay Rubin
8 posts | 2 read | 9 to read
REVISED AND UPDATED WITH NEW MATERIAL ON 1Q84As a young man, Haruki Murakami played records and mixed drinks at his Tokyo Jazz club, Peter Cat, then wrote at the kitchen table until the sun came up. He loves music of all kinds - jazz, classical, folk, rock - and has more than six thousand records at home. And when he writes, his words have a music all their own, much of it learned from jazz. Jay Rubin, a self-confessed fan, has written a book for other fans who want to know more about this reclusive writer. He reveals the autobiographical elements in Murakami's fiction, and explains how he developed a distinctive new style in Japanese writing. In tracing Murakami's career, he uses interviews he conducted with the author between 1993 and 2001, and draws on insights and observations gathered from over ten years of collaborating with Murakami on translations of his works.

30. International Jazz Day for #MayMontage

Most of Murakami's works have been influenced by music, most notably Classical and Jazz.
It's a widely known fact that music lover Murakami owned and ran a Jazz Bar in the 1970s.

#InternationalJazzDay

Also checking in for last weekend's #20in4 #Readathon - which didn't add up to much timewise ⬇️

Yuki_Onna ... continued - My cold hindered me quite a bit from reading, I slept most of the time... 🤧😴
But I got a chunk of pages read of both of my current reads, so it went fine nevertheless.✌️

For #day21 of the #augustphotochallenge. Haruki Murakami was a jazz club owner before he was a world-famous author, and his works are often imbued with his love of music. So much so that one of his main translators wrote a whole book about it. I purchased the copy in this photo years ago at Shakespeare and Company in Paris. #booksandmusic #augustofpages

Alisnazzy YESSSSSSSS!!! ALL THE FREAKING YESSSSSS! (Sorry, but I fangirl so hard over Murakami) 💖💖💖💖 8y

Pickpick

What a gem of a book! It gave an in depth synopsis of his books and short stories up until the book was written in 2002. It also gave a great insight into Murakami's inspiration for some of his works and a small look into his personal life. If possible I love him even more now!!

"Such a nostalgic reminiscence on hamburger steak could only have been written by Murakami."
It's funny because it's true LOL #onlymurakami

The ordinary Murakami claims no credits for the accomplishments of the other one, and that is probably what has kept the everyday Murakami such a decent, unassuming guy. He doesn't put on airs, and despite some of the hype he is no Salinger-style recluse, either. Love this!

Ahhhh I am going to love this book! I haven't even technically started it yet and I'm already sucked in!

BookishFeminist I'm intrigued- looking forward to seeing your thoughts. 8y
DiruVamp @BookishFeminist I became hooked on Murakami from the first book of his I picked up. Since I don't know Japanese and he's very private I jumped at the chance to pick up this gem at HPB! I will probably be posting a lot on this one LOL 8y
