Hattie Big Sky
Hattie Big Sky | Kirby Larson
Alone in the world, teen-aged Hattie is driven to prove up on her uncle's homesteading claim. For years, sixteen-year-old Hattie's been shuttled between relatives. Tired of being Hattie Here-and-There, she courageously leaves Iowa to prove up on her late uncle's homestead claim near Vida, Montana. With a stubborn stick-to-itiveness, Hattie faces frost, drought and blizzards. Despite many hardships, Hattie forges ahead, sharing her adventures with her friends--especially Charlie, fighting in France--through letters and articles for her hometown paper. Her backbreaking quest for a home is lightened by her neighbors, the Muellers. But she feels threatened by pressure to be a "Loyal" American, forbidding friendships with folks of German descent. Despite everything, Hattie's determined to stay until a tragedy causes her to discover the true meaning of home. From the Hardcover edition.

21 Nov-4 Dec 23 (audiobook)
Hattie is a teenaged orphan who has been shunted between distant relatives. During WWI, she receives a letter informing her that her uncle has left her his claim in Montana and she embarks on a quest to become a homesteader and make good her claim. It is interesting to follow her attempts and ponder the work and luck involved. She is also confronted with bigotry and discrimination in the name of patriotism.

Touching story of a young orphan girl homesteading in 1918 era East Montana with many hardships. True loving friends and "patriots" who are anti-German (as is one friend of hers). Based on author's ancestor.

This novel totally hit the spot for me and the sewing/self-sufficiency/flu pandemic made it perfect to listen to while making masks for my teen for camp. (She's the same age as Hattie, and it's difficult imagining her trying to prove a claim in Montana in 1918.)

My San Diego walk is a huge contrast to the Montana snow and cold in my audiobook. Hattie's Montana is also different from my only in-person experience of the state, an early-summer visit to Missoula and Glacier National Park years ago. It's making me crave an epic road trip (although admittedly it takes very little to get me craving epic road trips).

MemoirsForMe I‘m with you. I‘m always up for a road trip! 🚙🚗🚙🚗 3y

What a delightful YA book. Set in the early 1900s in #Montana, the main character, Hattie, tries to make a home for herself. This book has some very interesting characters, and the dynamics between all the frontier neighbors made for fun adventures. There's also hardship and lots of life lessons. Overall, I really enjoyed it.

Addison_Reads @Librarybelle It was on mine for a long time too, but your challenge has helped me get through some of my TBR. I liked this one so much that I started the sequel once I finished this one. 5y

I was scared, I was scared
Tired and under prepared
But I wait for it🎶

Hattie, still a teen, inherits a homestead in Montana but is not prepared for the back-breaking toil and fatigue of caring for animals and acreage..

"It seems the misfortune of one can plow a deeper furrow in the heart than the misfortune of millions."
This line touched me because I think that's true for all of us. It's overwhelming to think about doing something to help millions of people, but one person's plight can get many people moving.

TirzahPrice Oh, I love Hattie! 9y
