"First, Ill tell about the robbery our parents committed. Then the murders, which happened later." So begins Canada, the unforgettable story of Dell Parsons,a young man forced by catastrophic circumstances to reconcile himself to a world rendered unrecognizable. Spirited across the Montana border into Saskatchewan and taken in by Arthur Remlinger, an enigmatic man whose own past exists on the other side of the border, Dell struggles to understand what his future can be even as he comes to understand the violence simmering below the surface in his new life. In this brilliant novel, set largely in Saskatchewan, Richard Ford has created a masterwork. Haunting and spectacular in vision, Canada is a novel rich with emotional clarity and lyrical precision, and an acute sense of the grandeur of living. It is a classic-in-the-making from one of our times greatest writers.

#Alphabetgame #LetterC @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Canada has the most authentic and believable first person narrator I've ever come across. It's a slow book, it isn't for everyone, but I loved it.

Honourable mentions:
The Count od Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas
The Clan of the Cave Bear, by Jean M. Auel

AllDebooks Count of MC has to be one if the best revenge novels ever written 2y

Mehso-so

The first paragraph sets things up, telling the reader of the bank robbery and also about murders, still to come. So, it starts with a “bang”, but after that, the book moves pretty slowly. That being said, I grew up in Southern Saskatchewan and thought the descriptions were very well done. It‘s also always fun to recognize places, and there were a few really small towns mentioned nearby to where I lived. Overall, I‘m considering this one “ok”.

Hmmm not a cheerful lockdown read. I found the pace of the novel very slow. What drives ordinary people to commit crimes? Interesting read

Pickpick

An engrossing and at times disturbing account of a boy‘s flight from a family that has - in a most unusual , though uniquely American and believable way - disintegrated. His very survival is central to the story, with a backdrop that in no way romanticises the harsh politics of post-war Nth America. I was mesmerised by Ford‘s use of language which described with poignant accuracy the harsh beauty of the Canadian & mid-western landscape of the USA.

Sending my thoughts and prayers to Canada, my Canadian Litten friends and any Canadians I don‘t yet know for the developing Toronto van incident that unfortunately once again looks like has cost the lives of innocent everyday people (possibly based on early reports at this time), but has certainly caused major injuries.

My thoughts are with all of you, and sending my best wishes. 💔 Stay Safe! 🙏

Listening to this one. It‘s not what I expected but then, I rarely read reviews or synopses on books. I prefer to go in blind. It makes me want to explore more of my home. Does that count as “wanderlust”? #booksandshelfiesM18 #wanderlust #canada

Bailedbailed

I really hate bailing on books but I just can‘t go on so am abandoning this at 45% 😩 The style is deliberate and methodical, which is fine, but the characters‘ actions and dialogue seem so unnatural. It‘s the same experience I‘ve had reading certain translated books. The last scene I read was just too much and I have to put this down. Shame, since all the GR reviews I read were so positive.

cariashley @Suet624 same, I feel like there‘s something wrong with me 🤷🏼‍♀️ 7y
Aseleener I had the same experience with this book. I thought it moved painfully slowly. Too much character and not enough action for me. I believe I bailed at the exact same place you did. It was the final straw. 4y

This has been on my TBR for a while, and since I was actually visiting Canada this weekend I thought it was a perfect next read! It‘s about a totally different part of Canada from where I am but oh well 😂
