A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled
A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled | Ruby Wax
500 years ago no-one died of stress: we invented this concept and now we let it rule us. We might have evolvedto be able to miraculously balance on seven-inch heels, but as far as our emotional development is concerned we're still swimming with the pond scum. If we don't advance our more human qualities then we're doomed evolution-wise to become cyborgs, with an imprint of an 'Apple' where our hearts used to be. Ruby Wax shows us a scientific solution to these modern problems: mindfulness. I know what you're thinking - what if I don't want to stare at a butterfly wing or hear the single ting of a wind chime? My definition of mindfulness isn't about sitting erect on a hillock, legs in a knot, humming a mantra that's probably the phone book sung backwards, it's something that can help us all: learning to notice your thoughts and feelings so you can truly experience life. Outrageously witty, smart and accessible, Ruby Wax shows ordinary people how and why to change for good. With mindfulness advice for relationships, for parents, for children and for teenagers, and a six-week course based on her studies of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy with Mark Williams at Oxford University, A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled is the only guide you need for a healthier, happier life.

I'm putting this out there for anyone struggling atm. Life is hard at times, mostly mediocre, then truly magnificent, but always utterly amazing. Take a moment to appreciate that and recognise the good things in your day, give thanks for them.

When I'm having a bad day, I go outside and watch the sky, taking deep breaths. Just really watch all the changes of cloud patterns, light, life flitting across the sky. ⬇️

AllDebooks I promise it really works at calming your thoughts. Keep keeping on xxx 1y
AllDebooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks sorry to hear life is a bit bleurgh atm. Sending love xx 1y

A nice tranquil image to go with this book. Feeling proud of myself today as I‘ve survived a whole day in the office with my ‘team‘ without having to hide & cry/rage/actually bite my tongue. I have simply observed the nonsense going on around me.

No, seriously, this book is very good. The first half is kind of an explanation of why/how mindfulness works. Very none-woowoo, more hard-edged, making it

rockpools easier to get through a day. I listened on audio.

Then it moves to a 6 week programme of exercises, followed by mindfulness for different people/situations (children, at work etc). You really need something printed for those bits as you do need to stop and start and flick.
2y
rockpools It‘s dotted throughout with Ruby Wax‘s personal stories, which are cringy-relatable and never have a perfect ending. And she is straight-up honest throughout (this won‘t fix stuff. But it might stop your brain spirals taking you into round two) All in all, very very good. 2y
squirrelbrain Sounds great - stacked! 2y

TrishB That sounds like some of my days in the office…..I‘m really cynical about help books, but there‘s always a first! 2y
rockpools @TrishB That‘s fair enough. You have to read an awful lot of dross to find the ones that can be helpful to you. And some of the dross is spectacularly drossy! 2y
rockpools @squirrelbrain It‘s quite slow, but I like that she deals with the theory/science bits before she goes anywhere near the selfhelpy bits. 2y
julesG Stacked. Might help with my brain adventure park. 2y
MicheleinPhilly @TrishB I‘ve only been able to manage 1 “self-help” book and that was because the author is a snarky asshole just like me. His app is now one of my favorites. 2y
RaeLovesToRead Love the picture! Where is it? 2y
rockpools @RaeLovesToRead Thanks! Just Devon when the sun‘s shining 🌞 2y
ShelleyBooksie Stacked based on your review. I also do not enjoy the "woo hoo" type of self help. 2y
rockpools @MicheleinPhilly 😂😂 I might take a look! I think I‘ll try his podcast as well. 2y
rockpools @julesG Yay! 🎢🎡🎠. Yeah, I don‘t know. Things that do/don‘t help are so individual, but I found this less annoying than lots. 2y
rockpools @ShelleyBooksie 👍☺️ I do hope you like it if you get to it. 2y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly thanks 👍🏻 maybe next time I‘m tempted! 2y

rockpools @MicheleinPhilly Thanks Michele! I‘ve emailed you. 2y

Huh. This might actually be really good. Lots of why and how your brain works before we get to the how. The audio‘s read by Ruby Wax, and her personal stories are painfully awkward and relatable ( without any neat wrap-ups). Narration is totally ‘straight‘, not played for laughs - which makes some of the funny lines funnier.

Unexpected so far.

I‘ve been in the worst reading rut I‘ve ever been in. Nothing is keeping my attention, no matter how badly I want to read the book. 😔 It‘s really bringing me down lately. I‘ve picked up old favorites, books I‘ve had on my list forever, and even tried several different audio books. I am just not sure what to do anymore!?

darklydreaming Sorry to hear! That can be so frustrating. When I get in a reading rut I take a break from it completely but I always come back💕 6y
Redwritinghood Maybe just take a break. Enjoy something else and I‘m sure you‘ll come back to reading when you‘re ready. 6y
tammysue Don‘t let it get you down. I went through that not long ago. I kept trying to read even magazines but nothing held my attention. I finally ended up just stepping away from reading. Took almost a full month to get my reading mojo back. Give it time ❤️😊 6y

wanderinglynn I‘ve been in a rut too going on 3 mos now. 😕So I‘ve been doing other things (binging Netflix, working jigsaw puzzles, playing app games). It is frustrating. But the important thing is not to beat yourself up over it. 💜 6y
Weaponxgirl Just relax about it. For me watching documentaries and still following book blogs means I will eventually pick something up in excitement again. Also comics, not even serious ones. Just silly stuff, we don‘t always have to be reading. 6y
Weaponxgirl Also, if you remember that most people don‘t even read one book a month it puts it into perspective. (edited) 6y
MotionChickness @darklydreaming @Redwritinghood @whatshesreadingnow @wanderinglynn @Weaponxgirl Thank you guys for the support and suggestions!!! ☺️☺️♥️ I‘m just gonna give it a break like y‘all say... I‘m sure I‘ll find my way back. Just so frustrating because I WANT to read, but when I get to it I lose interest 👎🏻 6y

Note to self: must practice mindfulness.

Ruby Wax is funny and smart. I'm sad she's been through the challenges she has but grateful she's chosen to share her story and the lessons she's learned.

Wow, this sounds like an interesting book. I might have to get it soon. Comedy with insightful information to become mindful. Not just to become "mindful," but to help people who are struggling with depression. I recommend that you listen to the podcast.

Podcast discussing the book with the author.

This gave me all the feels.. " to relish its woody undertones but your mind is somewhere else so you miss the whole experience, and now your urinating it out without having tasted it" I can relate to this so much when you wait a lifetime for an experience and don't relish the now of that same experience because your daydreaming about the next one! #selfhelp #mindfulness #revelations

#page24ofcurrentbook. Reading a couple of guides at the moment I feel like with non fiction it's okay to dip in and out rather than a front to back fiction novel so like to have a couple to hand to refer to for refreshers! Started this ruby wax guide today finding very interesting so far! #readjanuary
