Dreadnought | Robert K. Massie
19 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
"A classic [that] covers superbly a whole era...Engrossing in its glittering gallery of characters." CHICAGO SUN-TIMES Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Robert K. Massie has written a richly textured and gripping chronicle of the personal and national rivalries that led to the twentieth century's first great arms race. Massie brings to vivid life, such historical figures as the single-minded Admiral von Tirpitz, the young, ambitious, Winston Churchill, the ruthless, sycophantic Chancellor Bernhard von Bulow, and many others. Their story, and the story of the era, filled with misunderstandings, missed opportunities, and events leading to unintended conclusions, unfolds like a Greek tratedy in his powerful narrative. Intimately human and dramatic, DREADNOUGHT is history at its most riveting.

It‘s done!! I did it! This glorious chunkster is finally off my TBR! I‘m using it as a Free Space on my bingo board because I deserve some kind of reward! 😅😂
Honestly I loved it, it was just a lot to digest. Lots of info packed into a thousand pages. I learned so much but never felt like I was reading a dry history book. Massie knows how to keep his reader engaged and his in-depth research and knowledge is mind blowing. ❤️🤯❤️

I was close to squeezing in one extra book on top of my Goodreads goal of 52, but in the end I didn‘t make it. Still, I‘m insanely pleased with the fact that I did hit my goal that I set back at the beginning of 2020. Hope everyone made progress on their goals whether you met them or not! ❤️
#CrushTheRush @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 1. I'm sorry I missed this. 2. GREAT JOB CRUSHING THAT GOAL!!! 3. Didn't you throw a chunkster or two into your list? You likely read the equivalent of 55 by page average. 😂 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick No worries! I honestly almost forgot to post a follow-up at all. 😂🤣 Thank you, it was definitely awesome to reach my goal and get some old reads off my TBR. ❤️ Yes, there was an especially HUGE chunkster at the end of the year that is still hanging on into the New Year by about 20 pages. 😅 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Well to quote Larry the Cable Guy, "Giterdone". ??? I had such a weird month at work and trying to etsy on to off everything I didn't get to just scroll through Litsy. I may pick a few Littens at random and go 5 weeks back to see what I missed. Look out! 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Haha! Yes! 😂🤣 I‘ve definitely had to do that before. 😅 I‘ll consider myself warned! 😂🤣 4y

The first book I read in 2020 was arguably the worst book I read all year - Dog Master by W. Bruce Cameron 🤦‍♀️🙄😤🤬 Guess it was a sign of things to come. 😅
The last book and the one I‘m ringing in the new year with is the tagged book. Thankfully I‘m ending 2020 and starting 2021 on a high note. This one is definitely a 5 ⭐️ read!

I‘m probably being overly ambitious (Who, me? Never! 🙄🤦‍♀️) but here are my #BFC21 goals for January.
I have quite a number of resolutions for 2021 and I‘m happy to have a space to go to for support for these. My parents gave me a year pass to the state parks, so I don‘t have any excuse not to utilize it as often as possible. 😅
To clarify, my book goals do add up to me reading a total of seven books this month. 🤞
@wanderinglynn

wanderinglynn Great goals! 🎉 And Team BFC21 will be here to cheer you on. 4y

My Winter Break has officially started! 🤘😆🤘 Looking forward to two full glorious weeks off from both jobs! ❤️🥰❤️
Hubby brought me some coffee in the mug he got me for my birthday, I‘m snuggled under some fuzzy blankets, and my big chunkster is here to keep me company. What more could a Bookwyrm ask for?

Chrissyreadit I just laughed so hard at your mug I almost peed myself 😂😂😂😂😂 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Chrissyreadit 😂🤣 That was my reaction when I unwrapped it! He loves play-on-words, especially if they end up as innuendos. 😅 4y
Crazeedi Enjoy your time off! Robert Massie is a great author 4y

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Crazeedi Thank you! 😊❤️ He‘s amazing! I‘ve added his other works to my TBR. I‘ve been fangirling over him all month. 😅 Do you have a favorite of his? 4y
Crazeedi @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm his catherine the great amwas excellent. I have nicholas and Alexandra to read. His knowledge of Russian history is awesome. 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Crazeedi I was thinking of starting The Romanovs after reading Castles of Steel, the second Dreadnought book. Though that won‘t be happening immediately, I‘ve pretty much got my January reading list planned and Mr. Massie isn‘t on it. 😅 I love him, but I know I‘ll need a bit of a break from history books to completely absorb this one. 4y

❤️😍😂🤣❤️ I‘m not sure how good of a book-raft a sponge really makes... But can we say “Life Goals” when it comes to Balfour‘s book collection?!? 😱

Yes, that‘s GTAV in the background. The hubby and I enjoying our separate hobbies, together. 😅

cozypunk I did a double-take! We're both reading books titled Dreadnought but by different authors. 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @dandy.punk Lol, too funny! 😂🤣😂 Litsy always thinks I mean that one! I have to go down the list of all the books with the same title when posting on here. 4y
cozypunk @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm what inspired you to pick up your Dreadnought? 4y

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @dandy.punk I watch a bunch of “old men BookTubers” but I think it was specifically Steve Donoghue (https://youtube.com/user/saintdonoghue) that had this in a haul or shelf tour vid of some sort. I‘m a bit of a history buff and after his review and looking it up on Goodreads, I had to have it. 😅❤️ How about you and yours? 4y
cozypunk Youtube here too! https://youtu.be/9su6lq5WVII ▶️😅 I follow Dominic Noble's webseries Lost in Translation (reviews of films and the books they're based on). More recently, he's been doing just-book-reviews. Plus I bought it as a gift for someone and realized I better get reading before they receive it! 4y
cozypunk I'll check out your youtube link. Any other history-book-vloggers to share? I've already decided to read more history in '21! 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @dandy.punk Omg, I LOVE Dom!!! 😍 He‘s hilarious! I just recently watched his review of the Twilight series! 😂🤣😂🤣 Richardson Reads and Bill Ruttenberg are two other YouTubers that also read history, not necessarily exclusively. They‘re certainly both responsible for sizable additions to my massive TBR. 😅 If I remember or come across any others, I‘ll let you know! 👍 BREAKING NEWS! Dom just uploaded a new Lost in Adaptation about The Prestige! 4y
cozypunk @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I adore his dumbass reenacting! And his cat out-takes. Thanks for the heads up - i better get cracking on my chores. 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @dandy.punk Omg, yes! 😂 I live for those cat outtakes! 😻 4y

Me: I should really get in a ton of reading hours today. It‘s my last day of vacay and I don‘t have any other responsibilities today!
Also Me: *spends an hour working on Yusuf x OC fan fiction from Netflix‘s Marco Polo*
I don‘t know what‘s wrong with me. Send help... 😅

In all seriousness, I‘d love recommendations for books containing similar characters. I‘d describe him as a fiercely loyal, master torturer with a heart of gold. 😅❤️

Sometimes I just can‘t! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 I know I have the weirdest sense of humor, but this bit had me chuckling long after I‘d read it.
I‘m sorry for the text size, and page curve in the one image. I hope it‘s legible for everyone! 😅

Chrissyreadit You cracked me up! I can‘t see the pages but I looked up the book - you are having a blast reading a non fiction chunkster about arms deals!!! This makes me want to do a book club with you... I could just imagine the questions you‘d present for discussion!!! 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Chrissyreadit Lol, I‘m surprised too! I never thought I‘d find it THIS entertaining! 😂🤣 There have been several times where I‘ve actually laughed heartily out loud. This part is explaining a boat race between some Americans and the Kaiser and how the Kaiser basically tries to play chicken with them and loses...multiple times... I‘d definitely be up for a book club depending on the book. 👍 4y

“I‘d rather be late ten times over than have to run once.” 😂🤣
Bismarck wins quote of the day. After stuffing myself the last two days, I can definitely sympathize. 😅
I‘m blown away by Massie‘s ability to make these monolithic historical figures into every day humans. Many historical writers can‘t get that part right and their writing ends up being dry and boring like a textbook. Massie makes it seem like I‘m almost reading a novel. 😍

I‘ll still be plugging away at the tagged monster the rest of the year, so it will be my main focus for any readathons that sprout up. ☕️😊📖🐱❤️ I‘ve got my coffee, a snuggly blanket with a cat for a lap heater, and my book. I am a happy Bookwyrm.

Phew! This is officially the earliest I have EVER put up our Christmas tree. 😅🎄❤️Close-ups of some of our favorites. It‘s always such a trip down memory lane, unboxing the ornaments and hanging them up each year.
My Christmas card writing is coming along and all books are purchased for swaps. I have a few goodies to gather still, but am confident everything will be ready to ship in time for each.
Now to settle down for a nice long read! ❤️🤓📖❤️

Boo-yah!! Take THAT 2020! ❤️🤘😆🤘❤️ I‘m stoked, you guys! It‘s been ages since I‘ve crammed this many books into one year. I‘m debating doubling it up for 2021 or just adding 20 or so... 🤷‍♀️
Hope everyone is doing well with their end of the year goals! You can do it!! ❤️😊👍

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Awesome! I hit my annual goal of 48 in June so I've been thinking I'll try for 60 next year (5 per month) and hope that I can achieve it. (I'm around 120 this year but some are shorts/kids/comics) 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Congrats! 😃👍 Lol, yeah the more I think about it, the more I think doubling it would only discourage me. 😅 I‘m thinking shooting for 72 is reasonable enough. 4y

Poor Dreadnought has been sitting on my TBR for close to a year. I think after I finish The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, I‘ll finally start in on this massive chunkster and see how far I get. 😅
