4/5
Exquisite writing. Poetic yet minimalistic. This story‘s strength lies in its stillness. I‘m not sure if it‘s because I‘m Korean, but I thought the author captured the silent hardships of the MC perfectly. Koreans are known for their “han” and especially Korean men of this time, a time of war, embody this deep silent ache. This short book is understated but focused.

This was the 2nd book I finished for Dewey‘s #readthon.

erzascarletbookgasm I liked this quiet novel too. 5y

Reading this whilst the monsoon is happening outside...
#lettery

batsy Happy monsoon reading! ⛈️ I'm reading The Other while it's pouring outside, seems appropriate 😂 5y
Smarkies @batsy the rains have been kinda brutal these last few days.... But as long as I am indoors with a book - something small to be thankful for. 😁 5y
batsy @Smarkies Yes, brutal is the word. The weekend was spent patching up leaks! But you're right, indoors with a book is a blessing 🙂 5y

Paul Yoon's writing was quite easy to read, yet beautiful and comforting. He was able to construct deep relationships in this book without the need of much use of dialogue. The way he was able to put together so many cultures and races but make them all come together was what attracted my attention the most in this book. It felt comfortable and nostalgic. 4/5 ☆

Making a note of all the books I need to finish off #litsyatoz since we are half way through the year. I have completed 14 and these - plus something I just ordered for the letter Q, should get me to the end of the year. 😁

Andrew65 I‘m up to 22, still need to finish U, V, Y, Z. Good luck with yours. 6y
Smarkies @Andrew65 thanks! Good luck with yours too 😁 6y
LeeRHarry Gosh I am way behind but you have inspired me to take stock and get back into it! 😊 6y
Smarkies @LeeRHarry a fellow Litten gifted it to me in a swap. I thought I should start to prioritise some of those books to see what others love in them as well. 😁 6y

Quiet read with some lyrical writing, but I wasn‘t particularly drawn into the story or captivated by the characters.

I‘m impressed with Thrift Books. One of my packages has been drifting locally for 6 days. They are sending replacements for free. It‘s only two books, but still......👌🏾

wanderinglynn I‘ve had great experience with Thriftbooks customer service. 7y
batsy A few times I've had Thriftbooks orders go missing and they're super prompt with refunds 👍🏽 7y
Tamra @batsy @wanderinglynn good customer service is hard to come by. 😏 7y
Ruthiella Thrift Books customer service is great! Their stickers however can be very destructive 😬 7y
Tamra @Ruthiella I hate them all, but I find theirs easier compared to Betterworld. 😖 7y

Day 5 - Under 200 Pages: The fun thing about a photo book challenge is reacquainting oneself with your bookshelves/ book collection. I was looking for any book under 200 pages and came across quite a few. These ones I have read and I rediscovered some that I want to read soon. I had no idea that I owned this many short novels/novellas. This stack...strong writing, poetic expression, emotional and intellectual connection. Good reads! #MarchInBooks

This is a quiet and beautiful story about a North Korean POW who left his country after the war ended, and settles in Brazil. It traces his friendships and connections with the local people in the midst of his recurring memories of his traumatic past. It‘s a story of loss and solitude - of postwar life and finding hope in the face of grief and sorrow. Prose is graceful and subtle. A lovely novella.

A little reading before calling it a day. #currentread
A modest story depicting a young POW trying to accustom himself to a new life in a foreign land. The prose is poetic and paints vivid imagery.

mrp27 I've been wanting to read this one for awhile. Interested in your final thoughts. 7y
Tamra This morning I put this on my wish list on one of the used book sites. 😊 7y

What a read.
I must say, this is one of the best war-time books I've read. It was as though I could picture every word that was written in this book; I could see how the tailor shop was, and how the little town in Brazil looked like, the friendship between Kiyoshi and Yohan, and most of all, the unspoken love between Yohan and Bia. I loved this book.

quote
Cindyelizavaz

And he understood that he would never be able to hold all the years that had gone in their entirety. That those years would begin to loosen, break apart, slip away. That there would come a time when there was just a corner, a window, a smell, a gesture, a voice to gather and assemble.
