Tell Me Something Real
Tell Me Something Real | Calla Devlin
Three sisters struggle with the bonds that hold their family together as they face a darkness settling over their lives in this masterfully written debut novel. There are three beautiful blond Babcock sisters: gorgeous and foul-mouthed Adrienne, observant and shy Vanessa, and the youngest and best-loved, Marie. Their mother is ill with leukemia and the girls spend a lot of time with her at a Mexican clinic across the border from their San Diego home so she can receive alternative treatments. Vanessa is the middle child, a talented pianist who is trying to hold her family together despite the painful loss that they all know is inevitable. As she and her sisters navigate first loves and college dreams, they are completely unaware that an illness far more insidious than cancer poisons their home. Their world is about to shatter under the weight of an incomprehensible betrayal

I really loved this book! I listened to the audiobook from the library because the eArc has been on my shelf for for over 3 years. This is the story of Vanessa, her two sisters, her sick mom and her dad. It's about controversial cancer treatments in Mexico, about first loves, about discovering there are worst illnesses than cancer, and about the struggle to separate and chase our dreams. A very interesting book to read after Darling Rose Gold.

ChaoticMissAdventures I have such mixed feelings when I have had a book for years and finally get to it and love it. First I am WHY did it take me so long, then also thank you past self for looking out for me and my present reading self! 5y

Mehso-so

Vanessa, the sixteen-year-old middle sister in this YA debut is trying to keep it together in 1970s era California. Her mother has cancer, her father works all the time and she's just met a guy. I have mixed feelings about this one. I just couldn't find the emotional centre, although I wouldn't go so far as to say don't bother.

I'm curious who has read this one? The author is my friend Holly's older sister and the story is a thinly fictionalized account of their upbringing.

#TBRtemptation post! Another YA book for your consideration. Three young sisters struggle to keep their family together. Their mother goes for alternative treatments for her leukemia at a Mexican clinic over the border from their San Diego home. Adrienne is gorgeous & foul-mouthed; Vanessa is shy & a talented pianist; Marie is the youngest and best-loved. As they prepare for the inevitable, they are deeply betrayed. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Enjoying this so far. I'm geeking out a bit on the cancer treatment I'd never heard of. Cyanide kills pretty much everything I guess.

I've got a conference call in a minute, but for now, I'm listening. Great choice for #setinthe1970s for the #litsyreadingchallenge

drokka If I recall correctly the first cancer treatment in the UK was with mustard gas. It got rid of the cancer but killed everything else with it. I think chemo is still based on some of the ingredients in mustard gas. But I won't swear to that. 8y
Megabooks @drokka I can't remember which one, but yes, this product is still available in some form but not as widely used. 8y

Guess I set the bar too low this year. Aiming for 85 or more now.

Am I going crazy? I swear this was mentioned on one of the bookish podcasts I listen to (All the Books, Get Booked, Reading Women), but now I can't find any evidence of it. Where would I have heard of this one. Any ideas?

MLVReads I'm pretty sure I heard about this through a list of the best books read in 2016 (so far) on Book Riot. I know it also has a review from Book Riot on Goodreads. Maybe you saw it there? 8y
