Seattle City of Literature
Seattle City of Literature: Reflections from a Community of Writers | Ryan Boudinot
9 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
This bookish history of Seattle includes essays, history and personal stories from such literary luminaries as Frances McCue, Tom Robbins, Garth Stein, Rebecca Brown, Jonathan Evison, Tree Swenson, Jim Lynch, and Sonora Jha among many others. Timed with Seattles bid to become the second US city to receive the UNESCO designation as a City of Literature, this deeply textured anthology pays homage to the literary riches of Seattle. Strongly grounded in place, funny, moving, and illuminating, it lends itself both to a close reading and to casual browsing, as it tells the story of books, reading, writing, and publishing in one of the nation's most literary cities.

juliegumdrop I‘ve really enjoyed this series of Litsy posts of your bookshelves! 6y
Zelma Ready Player One is super fun, especially if you have any familiarity of 80s pop culture. And Hyperbole and a Half is just wonderful. Funny, honest, and one best depictions of depression in a book I‘ve seen. 6y

Reagan I‘m a huge Nick Cutter fan. Little Heaven is not for the faint of heart. 6y

My wife and I just returned from a West Coast trip and spent a few days in #Bellingham, WA to stay with my cousin. We visited #hendersonbooks, the second most awesome used bookstore I have ever visited. Sooooo many books, so well organized...if you are in the area it is a must-see!

AmyG Wow that‘s alot of books! Looks wonderful. 6y

#landmarksofmycity How could I NOT post this? And it‘s MY shot! I got up before dawn, around the time the #Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl (hence the Space Needle being lit up blue and green, with the 12 flag on top) to get this. Taken with a specialty lens called a LensBaby that gives the effect you see. It‘s one of my favorites. Taken from the quintessential cityscape viewpoint on Queen Anne at Kerry Park. Clwojick Love it. ❤️ 7y
DebinHawaii What a great shot! 💙 7y
Pamwurtzler So pretty. Do the lights on the Space Needle change color regularly? 7y

kamoorephoto @Pamwurtzler They do all sorts with the lights and the flag to reflect things going on; pride flag, Holiday lights, they do NYE fireworks at the Needle, all sorts of things. It‘s really a beacon for the city and really reflects the mood of the people with regard to local and national events. It‘s pretty cool 💙💚 7y
Itchyfeetreader This is an amazing photo 7y
Serotonin Gawd I miss Seattle 😢 7y
Joanne1 Lovely. All I had in my head about Seattle before this was that it rains a lot. This is much prettier. 7y
PolaroidPoet Ahhhh.. I miss living there. I have so many photos from Kerry park! Love it! 7y
kamoorephoto @Joanne1 It definitely doesn‘t; you should visit in summer! Our summers are glorious! @PolaroidPoet @Serotonin I‘d miss the heck out of it too. It‘s such a fabulous city. It has changed so much since I‘ve lived here but I 💙 it so much. @Clwojick @DebinHawaii @Itchyfeetreader Thank you! It was worth the wait for this one. I‘ve gone up there several times early morning for sunrise shots but this is my favorite. 7y
Joanne1 @kamoorephoto we're currently planning a US trip for your summer next year. So far it's San Fransisco (hubby has a work thing there for a week, hence the trip), LA for a week and then another week yet to be planned. Perhaps we should consider Seattle? 7y
kamoorephoto @Joanne1 Come visit!! Summer is awesome!!!! We‘ll go book shopping! I can tell you all the cool spots... 💙💚 7y
TricksyTails 😍💙♥️💜💚 So beautiful!! This makes me miss Seattle so much! Gorgeous photo! 7y

Pickpick

As Paul Constant writes in his review, included as the closing entry in this book about the literary life of Seattle, this is "a terrific idea I've never seen done before." This will hold appeal for a segment of local readers who enjoy backstory as much as the writing itself.

Short pieces by Puget Sound writers, random interesting stuff (e.g.--Jim Lynch used to write while working nights at parking booth),all possibly more interesting to locals than others. Fun.
