I read this as a suggestion from someone after reading Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart. Unlike Shuggie, which was a love story between a son and his broken mom, this novel was much sadder because almost none of the adults were reliable to the young protagonist Baby, a twelve year old girl who wants to stay a little girl in order to survive.

Lullabies for Little Criminals is a highly acclaimed Canadian book and one that I have been looking forward to reading for years. I really like O‘Neill‘s writing and I felt for the main character, Baby, but overall I wasn‘t that invested in the story and didn‘t enjoy it as much as I had expected. 2 ⭐️

This is my #Montreal pick for #ReadCanada and book 9 for #BookSpinBingo!

MsMelissa I know her novels are well-loved, but Heather O‘Neil‘s books have never appealed to me. Sorry this one didn‘t work for you, especially since you‘d been looking forward to it. 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira I really did not like that one, which was a Book Club read, but I truly enjoyed the tagged book from the same author. (edited) 4y
candority @Book_Fiend_Melissa I can understand that. It‘s okay though - on to the next one! 4y

candority @Josee.a.lu.lit.et.lira I enjoyed The Lonely Hearts Hotel as well! I think I gave it four stars at the time. The two books are similar, yet my experience was so different for each of them 🤔 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira @candority even though the themes were similar, the difference for me was that I felt Rose had her imagination to escape and create; Baby had nothing, I bailed out of desperation on it. I gave 5⭐️ for TLHH and bailled on LLC. 4y
candority @Josee.a.lu.lit.et.lira Well said! 4y

Happy Canada Day to all my fellow Canadians 🇨🇦

To celebrate, I finalized my #ReadCanada list! It was hard to narrow down some of my choices, especially for Ontario, but I‘m really looking forward to all of these!

If anyone is looking for recommendations, let me know!

Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira Working on mine right now! Have you read O‘Neil before? (edited) 4y
MsMelissa This is a great list, and I love how you‘ve used a map to display it 😊. Some of my choices will be the same as yours 👍🏻 4y
candority @Josee.a.lu.lit.et.lira I read The Lonely Hearts Hotel when it came out and enjoyed it, so I‘m looking forward to this one! How about you? 4y

LeahBergen Nicely done! 👏🏻👏🏻 4y
LeahBergen Oh, and Monoceros is good! 🦄 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira @candority I read both, but TLHH, was more interesting for me, I was very attached to the two main characters. The LFLC is really harsh, harsher than TLHH and I did not connect as much with the girl. 4y
candority @Book_Fiend_Melissa Thank you! I‘m looking forward to the unofficial buddy reads for some of the provinces! 4y
candority @LeahBergen Thanks! I‘m looking forward to it! 4y
candority @Josee.a.lu.lit.et.lira Yeah, I‘ve heard that I need to prepare myself for the harshness of it. We‘ll see how it goes 😊 4y

This book was just a tragedy from beginning to the soul crushing middle and the end that implies everything will be fine but really leaves you with a deserted feeling. The end angered me for so many reasons.

This is one of those books that I have had on my TBR for years. I finally bought it, waited months to start it, got a quarter of the way through it than put it down. Now that I've also downloaded the audiobook, I've finished it in less than 24 hours. It was so good, and I'm sad that I waited so long to read it. Definitely recommend. ❤️

Sassy_Steph I've heard great things about this book!! 7y

Started the physical book a few months ago. I got about 1/4 way thru, and ended up getting distracted by another book. Figured I'd start the audiobook tonight. I've really liked it so far, and can't wait to finally finish it. 👌

Jazzper2 It's worth the read. 7y

42 ~ Lullabies for Little Criminals by Heather O'Neill (Kindle edition📱) ~ Started: 20.04.17 ~ Finished: 23.04.17
Rating: 5/5📚

This is the second book I have read by Heather O'Neill & she never fails to amaze me with her writing, the power of her writing. Baby, the main character & narrator is unforgettable.

Highly recommended

Appreciate gut wrenching story, but had to force myself to finish. Wasn't enjoying my reading time. Not bad writing, but maybe not the right book at the right time for me. Writing style was as if I was staring at a pretty pair of shoes, encrusted with actual star dust, catching the light of a thousand rainbows, but when I put my feet into them, they were the complete wrong size & shape. Painfully forced simile? Yeah. About five of those per page.

Apparently angels stomp on stairs. Didn't you know? I'm so tired of the lame similes. I need to be done with this book. Every time it sucks me back in, one of these stinkers drops. Ugh

My pick for child protagonists for #day16 of #photoadaynov16 is this award-winning book by Heather O'Neill. Baby's story is heartbreaking, raw and at times terrifically hard to read, but her voice is unforgettable and authentic. A book that could easily run off the rails, but holds together for a wild ride. Note: trigger warnings for child abuse and prostitution.

lisakoby Fabulous pick! 8y
