Pickpick

Interesting and entertaining, this book focuses on cultural attitudes about menstruation, particularly during the 19th-20th centuries in the United States, with a heavy emphasis on advertising and marketing of “feminine products.” This is not a heavy scientific book, more a book that shows how advertising/culture has reinforced the idea of periods as negative, sometimes weirdly. Illustrated with vintage ads for feminine products!

I‘ve posted about this book before, but it is a favorite of mine. If you liked Unmentionable, check this book out!

Zonite would definitely be the perfect product to turn you into a #burningbride. One of the ingredients was sodium hypochlorite, so essentially you would be douching with bleach. 😬🤷🏼‍♀️

Billypar The salesmanship of the article is something else. I was nodding to the title question, 'Sure, her information should absolutely be complete and correct'. But the 'and therefore...' part sure came out of nowhere! 6y

This actually probably ranks up there as one of my favorite books. It‘s fun and informative, but let‘s be honest, the history of menstruation and female care in general included a lot of #dumbthings. Such as LYSOL douche. Yes really. Just imagine it . . . or maybe don‘t. 😵😵 #marchintooz

Reggie Lolololololololololololololololololol You go Grandma!!!! After my grandfather died, much to the chagrin of her kids, my grandmother started to experience a life where she didn‘t have a husband, or had kids or grandkids to raise and she started to get out there. She started painting, going to line dance classes at the senior center and then came the day when we were told the cops got called on her at a bar for almost fighting some lady who was 7y

Not book related, but helpful for the female population. I was listening to a Freakonomics podcast about Thinx, a company that has created "period panties." These panties are reusable, keep you dry and comfortable during your period. Check them out, with your purchase you also help a girl in Africa receive an Afripad kit. Here's a video. These panties are expensive, but they sound worth it, check it out.

Just picked this and few others up today at A library book sale rack. #DetroitPublicLibrary #RedfordBranch
"It was't until the frighteningly recent 1950s that the diagnosis of hysteria, at least as it related to unexplainable female behavior, was finally, laid to rest, after one of the longest runs by any faux medical condition in history."

Susan Kim and Elissa Stein's cultural history of menstruation in the US—cultural messaging, advertisements, educational materials—is definitely among my favorite collaboratively-written books. By turns hilarious and horrifying, this is fun to flip through for a look at the ads, but it also serves as a great explanation as to why there is STILL so much bad advice, misinformation, and pseudoscience about periods. #augustofpages #augustphotochallenge

Reviewsbylola I loved this. Such a fun and educating read. 8y

BookBabe This is interesting...I recently was wondering if there is such a history to read. When I was ten, I read Judy Blume's "Just As Long As We're Together," and it mentioned a "sanitary belt" which confused and horrified me! ? Every now and then I think of that, and I'm curious about the historical evolution. So, thanks for sharing this! 8y
GinaAnderson Timely, too, given the recent comments by the Chinese Olympic swimmer. 8y
