Pygmalion and My Fair Lady (Anniversary)
Pygmalion and My Fair Lady (Anniversary) | George Bernard Shaw
5 posts | 16 read | 1 to read
The ancient Greeks tell the legend of the sculptor Pygmalion, who created a statue of a woman of such surpassing beauty that he fell in love with his own creation. Then, Aphrodite, taking pity on this man whose love could not reach beyond the barrier of stone, brought the statue to life and gave her to Pygmalion as his bride. Centuries later, George Bernard Shaw captured the magic of this legend in his celebrated romantic play, Pygmalion. Pygmalion became Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics, his statue an untutored flower girl from the streets of London, and the barrier between them the difference in their stations in life.In My Fair Lady, Alan Jay Lerner takes the legend one step further the barrier is swept away and Higgins and Eliza are reunited as the curtain falls on one of the loveliest musical plays of our time winning seven Tonys(r) for its original Broadway production, and seven Oscars(r) for its film adaptation."

This teapot cozy is ruining my life hardcore. I've been trying to make this thing off and on for years and I always give up. I SHALL PREVAIL. At least I have My Fair Lady playing in the background to sing along with. 😭😂

laurieluna You can do it! I have never gotten past the scarf stage of knitting. That looks so colourful! 7y
blithebuoyant @miralunasbooknook girl, learning to knit and continuing to knit with ADHD is HARD AF and one of the only things I'm hardcore proud of myself for doing 😂but this teapot cozy with this damned cable pattern is kicking me in the ass lol when I first started knitting I hated it, but then I learned to crochet and knitting made much more sense after I learned crochet first. 7y
blithebuoyant @miralunasbooknook the yarn is lion brand ice cream in the colorwat "tutti frutti"! And if you cast on a sock-appropriate number of stitches it's self striping! 7y

laurieluna I love it! My friend bought me a sock pattern book, it terrifies me! 😂 I crochet too, but it's mostly just little hearts and snowflakes etc. I currently have a cable knit scarf in progress, it's been on the needles for about 4 years! 🙈 I'll finish it when I'm 60 probably haha. 7y
blithebuoyant @miralunasbooknook socks are SO INTIMIDATING but once I started doing them, I actually found them really relaxing. The trick for me is using 9in circular needles instead of those wind chimes of death we call DPNs 😂magic loop is good too, but you can imagine how fast it goes when you don't have to adjust your needles at all, you can just scoot the socks around your circulars like a hat! 7y
laurieluna @blithebuoyant yeah I started a pair and I'm using dpns. Keep forgetting which way round I'm knitting etc and where I last was with the stitch count 😩 I can't knit on a daily basis so things get put down, sometimes for weeks and then I forget where I am, even when I've noted stuff down! That's why I find cross stitch easier. Can see exactly where I am. 7y
blithebuoyant @miralunasbooknook oh god, cross stitch. I picked it up just before my grandma passed in August and I loved it. For years, I was the only one who couldn't cross stitch in my house, including my brother 😂 I haven't really gotten to do much of it though, I'm always so preoccupied with knitting and crochet. 7y
MicrobeMom So pretty! I love the rainbow yarn. I currently have the same problem with a vest I am making. I am sure you will get it this time. 7y

Impulsively, I set aside my current-reads and started re-reading Pygmalion by G.B Shaw. I just love this play! I am equally fond of 'My Fair Lady'. Now I can't stop singing, "All I want is a room somewhere..."

rubyslippersreads Now you've got me singing it! 😄🎶 Wouldn't it be loverly? 🎶 7y
BiblioLitten @rubyslippersreads 😀 even better to have someone sing along 🎶🎙 7y

Discovered this was on TMC tonight. I love Audrey and wish they had left her singing voice in the movie. Got to love a play/movie about linguistics and phonetics lol

MatchlessMarie I know how you feel! This is one of my all time favorites. 8y
moranadatter I saw a showing of this movie once in a theater and they showed one of the songs with her vocal track after the movie. I agree they should have left it. They didn't dub over Rex Harrison. 8y
OrangeMooseReads @moranadatter no and he has a terrible voice. I've heard some of the Audrey tracks, plus she sang in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' and 'Funny Face' she had a great voice (edited) 8y

My aunt and uncle treated the family to this wonderful production of My Fair Lady at the Lyric Opera in Chicago today. I've never seen it on stage and it was so good!! I'm sure I will have 🎶I Could Have Danced All Night 🎶 in my head for days. #broadway
