Brother of the More Famous Jack
Brother of the More Famous Jack: A Novel | Barbara Trapido
33 posts | 22 read | 31 to read
Back in print, the debut novel that redefined the coming-of-age genre, now with an introduction by New York Times bestselling author Maria Semple.Ask today's favorite novelists what books influenced their writing and you'll hear Brother of the More Famous Jack again and again.Worn dog-eared copies of this long out-of-print novel are highly prized and shared enthusiastically in literary circles-its return to print is cause for celebration.Stylish, suburban Katherine is eighteen when she is propelled into the heart of Professor Jacob Goldman's rambling home and his large eccentric family. As his enchanting yet sharp-tongued wife, Jane, gives birth to her sixth child, Katherine meets beautiful, sulky Roger and his volatile younger brother, Jonathan. Inevitable heartbreak sends her fleeing to Rome, but ten years later, older and wiser, she returns to find the Goldmans again.

The story of a naive young woman who finds herself at London University + is quickly adopted by her tutor, jacob Goldmans bizarre family. As the story unfolds, we follow love affairs and a 6 year life in Italy. An enjoyable read, but at the end, I put it down not entirely sure that I will remember it for very long. I recall preferring the travelling hornplayer though suspect may have been more the timing of reading rather than the book itself.

MrsMalaprop Love Barbara Trapido. I once took shelter from the rain with her at a festival. 4mo
CarolynM @MrsMalaprop Wow, I bet that was a fun experience! I love her books. 4mo
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM she was lovely. It was an outdoor literary dinner where authors read from their work 😍. It poured ☔️ and everyone ran for cover. 4mo

andrew61 @MrsMalaprop @CarolynM This was my 2nd Trapido but definitely want to read more. What a fascinating encounter, definitely one for your memory box, sounds like a great dinner. Any other notable encounters? 4mo
MrsMalaprop So many 😆. A favourite involves @Rissreads . We were at the Perth Writers & Readers Fest one year in the bookshop. I was trying to pick my first Tony Birch to purchase & we were chatting about the merits of each one. This bloke comes up and says, “this one‘s meant to be good”. And it was Tony!!! I‘ve read a number of his since. I love his short stories the best. ❤️🖤💛 4mo

#12Booksof2022 #LitsyLoveReads @Andrew65 the merry month of May!A delightful coming-of-age sort of romance that's probably among my favourite books ever,a thriller that's so much more, and a classic Mitford caper.

BarbaraBB I‘ve got the same “rule” regarding annoying books! 2y
KateReadsYA Oh yes that rule for annoying books is gold!!!! I agree. Hope you have an amazing new year 💜🩵 2y
Vansa @BarbaraBB @KateReadsYA I've never done that before! And I struggled through some completely awful doorstoppers this year. Definitely implementing this from now on! 2y

I enjoyed a lot of this book but it hasn‘t dated well. It made me laugh and made me cringe.

CarolynM I loved this when I read it a long time ago 🙂 Have you read any of her others? I liked the most recent one a lot too 2y
Rissreads @CarolynM thanks, I will check it out ♥️ 2y

In defence of Trapido, I‘m not a fan of a preppy, humorous novel, so my reaction is mostly a me thing. In defence of myself, I don‘t think this novel has aged very well. I think if this was your style, Trapido has done a nice-ish job of writing some zingy dialogue. But I cannot abide by the awful way women are objectives in this novel, and the application of a comedic tone to some fairly horrific life experiences grated me like a lemon zest.

Centique I bailed on this one when I tried it and your excellent review makes me think I don‘t need to try again. It also grated on me and felt dated. 3y
ClairesReads @Centique thank you! I definitely don‘t think it‘s worth your time giving it another go- your initial move was so right! 3y

Another light(ish) summer read. I think it's supposed to be funny but feeling like some of the humour is going over my head.

CarolynM I love Barbara Trapido. Her humour is more wry smile than laugh out loud. 3y
merelybookish @CarolynM It has a snappy quick wit that I like but also find hard to follow when I'm tired. Lol. 3y

#weeklyforecast @Cinfhen

I hope to finish Swanns Way in the next day or two and then I have a little lighter reading that I‘m looking forward to - a Barbara Trapido book and Shadowplay which was given to me by the lovely @Cathythoughts 💕😘

CarolynM I really enjoy Barbara Trapido's books. I'll be interested to what you think of Jack. 5y
batsy I have a friend who loves Trapido and keeps telling me to read her (I haven't). Look forward to your thoughts! 5y

Cinfhen I‘ve heard GREAT things about 5y
Centique @CarolynM @batsy I‘m looking forward to it ☺️ 5y
Centique @CarolynM I think I am bailing. Really like her writing - but there are a number of nasty slurs being used. I know it‘s the characters speaking but a small child just said one and I had to put it down 😬 @batsy I might try a different one. (edited) 5y
CarolynM That's unfortunate. I read it so long ago I don't remember those things - I was probably a lot less sensitive to them then. Her most recent book was set in South Africa (where she grew up) and deals a bit with race relations 5y
batsy Thanks for the warning! When do I give it a go I'll prepare myself... 5y
Centique @CarolynM @batsy I think she is probably sending up a class of people from the time who are almost making fun of those terms I guess, bohemians who like to swear a lot, playing with “bad” language. But I just can‘t do it today myself... I‘ll try that one instead thanks Carolyn! 5y

A nice conversation of characters, but the force that binds them, like the strong nuclear force, diminishes extremely rapidly with distance. I had no difficulty leaving them behind. Possibly I should have read the novel in the eighties. I did appreciate the Proust-like glancing narration of tragedy—it is very effective.

Delightful coming of age tale of a young stylish girl from London who falls in love with an upper class Jewish intellectual family. Kinda like a bohemian Brideshead Revisited. Superbly written, entertaining and heartbreaking all in the same chapter. For a light and engaging read I highly recommend #barbaratrapido #comingofage #london #rome
