Undying: A Love Story | Michel Faber
12 posts | 8 read | 13 to read
How can you say goodbye to the love of your life? In Undying Michel Faber honours the memory of his wife, who died after a six-year battle with cancer. Bright, tragic, candid and true, these poems are an exceptional chronicle of what it means to find the love of your life. And what it is like to have to say goodbye. All I can do, in what remains of my brief time, is mention, to whoever cares to listen, that a woman once existed, who was kind and beautiful and brave, and I will not forget how the world was altered, beyond recognition, when we met.

My thoughts for the day. I'm helping my cousins take care of my aunt as she enters into palliative care. She means so much to me, and I'm so very grateful for this time I have with her and her children.
Grab life by the horns and find the joy in every day. We never know how long we have, and I don't ever want to leave things until it's too late.

PurpleyPumpkin I‘m very sorry to hear about your aunt. 😔 I hope you‘re able to find some peace as you navigate these difficult times. My Mom recently died and being with her through the process was hard but I was grateful for the time we spent together. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. And thank you for sharing this quote. It really resonated with me. 💜 7mo

Mehso-so

These are some earnest, heartfelt poems. He clearly loved his wife a lot and misses her. The poems themselves, however, are so-so. I definitely enjoy his novels much more.

#poemsbeforephones My current poetry read is a collection by the author of one of my all time favorite books, The Crimson Petal and the White. It‘s written about his deceased wife and her battle with multiple myeloma. Sadly, a lot of the poems just aren‘t that good. I did like the above, though, as it highlights how he felt helpless to do anything about her situation. Very sad.

DivineDiana Looks like our current selections have a common thread. The Donald Hall poems are all very moving, but the sadness is such that I am choosing to share only a bit. ❤️ 6y
BarbaraBB I loved this book which was also about his wife dying. Have you read it? 6y
Redwritinghood @BarbaraBB Yes, I‘ve read that as well. Very different from Crimson Petal. Good, but I didn‘t like it as much. 6y
Redwritinghood @DivineDiana Yes, these are sad, but I‘m also not finding a lot that I like enough to share. 6y

Faber has written an exquisite collection of poetry about losing his wife to cancer --both the battle and the grieving. He manages to be both sparse and rich at the same time and each poem conveyed such a crystal clear emotion or experience. Highly recommend.

This poetry collection chronicles parts of Faber's wife's last year, her death and the following months. A lot of poems on death are on the sentimental side, but Faber instead mixes the sentimental with anger, confusion and of course profound sadness to create a highly relateable (beautiful written) account. He writes about well-meaning people, daunting task of preparing a funeral, doctors who sent his wife home to google the diagnosis and more.

BooksForEmpathy I am picking this is up immediately. Didn't know about this one!! 8y

Wow. An incredibly moving insight into the intimacies of a relationship growing ever stronger, as one partner's health deteriorates. I found it very hard to listen to Michel Faber talking about his late wife, but I very much admire so much emotional openness #edbookfest

Holy crap. This was a tough read, but a beautiful one. 'Undying' is bursting with love and anger and grief. Such brutal honesty about cancer and death that is took my breath away.

Michel Faber's poems to his sadly departed wife have arrived. I am going to need a hug from you all once I'm brave enough to read it. This collection will probably ruin me.

MusingsOnMidlife Ahhh that looks beautiful. 💔 8y
ReadingEnvy Ooh not a good time for me to read this one but I did enjoy your chat with him. And finally bought The Book of Strange New Things! 8y
