For saying I don‘t normally read short stories or sci-fi, I didn‘t dislike this, but I didn‘t love it. Scientists experimenting with life after death. Dubious ethics and outdated mindsets made me feel equally uncomfortable! #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

I didn‘t know du Maurier wrote sci-fic! This is a decent story of an engineer who was sent to an isolated research laboratory to work with a scientist..sort of a mad science story that raises the moral & ethical questions. A good story with interesting plot, but would work better if it‘s longer, I think. But as usual, du Maurier‘s writing is brilliantly effective in creating a foreboding & disturbing atmosphere. Give it a go. 👍

I was gifted this short story by @veritysalter for Christmas, but since it arrived late (thanks, postal service!) I decided to save it for #AuthoraMonth !!

An engaging & fast read, I enjoyed this one & found it interesting, but not particularly creepy or tense.

5 🌟

cmastfalk If I love Rebecca, will I enjoy this one? 4y
jenniferw88 @cmastfalk probably, but it deals with the idea of life after death. It's also a bit out-dated in terms of learning disabilities, and trigger warnings for mentions of leukaemia 4y

A suspenseful sci-fi short story by the author of Rebecca 👍👍. And my first little volume of Penguin Moderns. I can see how collectible these could be! Thanks so much to @BarbaraBB for sending this to me 💖!

LeahBergen Lovely! I wonder if this story is in one of my Du Maurier short story collections? 🤔 6y
BarbaraBB I am glad you liked it! I haven‘t read it, but I thought you can‘t go wrong with DuMaurier! 😘 6y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen it probably is! This story was originally published in 1968 I think. 6y

Picked up a mix of little black classics and penguin moderns as shorter reads as I‘ve been in a bit of a slump. Gonna read this on the train today methinks
