Pickpick

This story and the spectacularly perfect weather are incongruent, perhaps like the patterns in yellow wallpaper......I am in fact sort of stuck in the hammock.

I still like the story a lot and the creepy creeping is still creepy. But, I was disappointed to find out Perkins Gilman was not a perfect progressive in terms of race. 😭 Ugh, I do sometimes want to believe ignorance is bliss.

Louise Oh, no! What did you find out? Dang! 4y
Brooke_H Yes, these questions of “do we still read and enjoy the works” are so hard for me the more difficult things that emerge from our idols, both dead and living ones. (Gilman was a racist.) 4y
KathyWheeler If we keep expecting people to be ideologically perfect, we are going to end up being able to read, watch, look at, and listen to absolutely nothing. IMHO, we need to be able to look at people through a variety of lenses — including their time — and understand what influenced them. Do we throw out their work, no matter how good it may be, because their sensibilities don‘t match ours? With writers from different times, this is a problem. (edited) 4y

charl08 Yes, I had a similar reaction (we read Yellow Wallpaper for bookclub). 4y
Cathythoughts I was just thinking about you as I only finished & am reading the tagged books & thought you would like them ( if you havnt read ) I hope all is well with you , been missing you on Litsy. 4y
Tamra @Cathythoughts Hello Cathy! I am missing you and all the books on Litsy for sure. I have just been so caught up with life (family, kids at home with school, work, grad classes) that recreational reading is at a snail‘s pace. 😭 2020 is just so weird! How are things with you? 4y
Tamra @Cathythoughts I read this one and it had such a distinctive voice. 4y

Genre: Fiction
Date started: December 10, 2019
Date Finished: December 13, 2019
Why I chose this book: This was suggested by one of my friends, and they said it has a great plot.
Summary: The narrator in this book writes entries in a secret diary, and during her 3-month stay in an estate, she wrote something every day. On the first entry, it contained details about the reason why they were staying in an estate.

jash_v Her husband John diagnosed her with “a slight hysterical tendency.” The symptom showed were unclear, but her husband kept insisting that nothing was wrong with her. John is a respected physician, so she never doubted his assumptions. For the rest of their stay, she takes medicines and her husband has made a strict daily schedule. The narrator felt something was strange about the house, but John never paid attention. (edited) 5y
jash_v There is a room at the first floor and the narrator kept insisting her husband that they should stay there. The room is spacious and airy, and the windows had bars on them, the walls had a yellow wall paper that had been ripped off but still they chose to sleep there. 5y

I‘m out of the bed...sick or recovering I can stay in the bed for only a couple of days. I‘m sitting at the kitchen table, across from Mom sharing a cup of tea and discussing the effort that I have been making to participate in #24B4Monday and #SummersEndReadathon. I have read for 10h15m53s so far. However, my Mom has assured me that part of that time was surely spent dozing💤because I was not answering my phone. She‘s probably right because👇🏽

Tamra Speedy recovery! I loved The Yellow Wallpaper - in a creepy kind of way. 5y
Nute I feel better rested today which must be due to extra sleep and there has been no real progress in The Moving Finger. I think that I am going to switch from my Nook to a paperback....neither of the books pictured though - I was just showing these to Mom (btw Mom...maybe I wasn‘t answering my phone because I WAS READING! She doesn‘t understand.😶). Now, I‘m gonna follow through with (edited) 5y
Nute @Tamra Thanks, Girl. This cold really got a grip, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Yeah, I heard that The Yellow Wallpaper is a crazy read, but one that should be read especially by women. (edited) 5y

Andrew65 I obviously need to read The Yellow Wallpaper. You have done a brilliant job, especially if you been ill. 👏👏👏🙌Hope you are feeling better soon, nothing worse than colds and flu. 5y
Clwojick @Andrew65 You really do! 5y

Ruthiella Hope you feel better soon!❤️😀❤️😀 5y
WomanistBibliophile The Yellow Wallpaper, a classic! Have you read Herland? 5y
LatrelWhite Started My Antonia this weekend loving it! 💕 tea cups too! 5y
Nute @JSW @jb72 @Leftcoastzen @BarbaraJean @Andrew65 @Ruthiella I feel that a person recovers quicker when someone is sending well-wishes in their direction and praying for their return to good health. I thank each and every one of you for your kind words!💕 5y
Nute @WomanistBibliophile I have not read Herland, but it was placed on my radar by a bookseller a while back. Have you read both books? 5y
JSW 😘❤️ 5y
Nute @Latrelwhite I was surprised to find out that My Antonia is part of a series and it is not the first book. This is my compulsive behavior confession - I have to read series in order even when not required. When I discovered that this is the third book, I replaced it on my bookshelf. Now I must collect the other two. Did you read the first two books? 5y
WomanistBibliophile @Nute I have read them, many years ago. I liked many aspects of Herland, although I subsequently learned Perkins Gilman had some racist beliefs 5y
LatrelWhite @Nute No...I found out after I started reading it‘s a series. So not reading in order☺️reading the pioneers next! I normally would read in order because I too compulsive behavior but I‘m all in. (edited) 5y
Nute @Latrelwhite Understood!🙂 5y
Nute @WomanistBibliophile Could that be detected in her writing? 5y
LatrelWhite @Nute What is the name of the other book in the series?☺️ 5y
Nute @Latrelwhite First - O Pioneers / Second - The Song of the Lark / Third - My Antonia. I had heard of O Pioneers, but didn‘t know it had anything to do with My Antonia, and I‘ve never heard of the second book. We are on this journey together, you and I. Keep me posted on your progress.😊 (edited) 5y
LatrelWhite @Nute Thank you...I will my friend and you do the same.☺️👍🏽 5y
WomanistBibliophile @Nute I read them so long ago, at a time I was not very conscious of race politics/history so I don‘t think I would have been aware enough to notice. It was disheartening to later read some of her quotes relating to suffrage and emancipation 5y
