The Endless Steppe
The Endless Steppe: Growing Up in Siberia | Esther Hautzig
Exiled to Siberia In June 1942, the Rudomin family is arrested by the Russians. They are "capitalists -- enemies of the people." Forced from their home and friends in Vilna, Poland, they are herded into crowded cattle cars. Their destination: the endless steppe of Siberia. For five years, Ester and her family live in exile, weeding potato fields and working in the mines, struggling for enough food and clothing to stay alive. Only the strength of family sustains them and gives them hope for the future.

Was meaning to sort and dust my bookshelves but soon came across this, one of my all time favourite children‘s books so had to reread it. The author describes her experiences when exiled to Siberia from Poland in 1941. She shows an incredible ability to adapt and find joy. I read it to my fifth grade class over twenty years ago and one student recently got into contact with me to say it is still her favourite book.

Our read aloud today was chapter 20 of this incredible story of survival. Esther had a quick mind that seemed to always be scheming. I'm impressed with how she conquered some of the normal things of life, like a party, while starving & freezing in Siberia. 💃🏻

I definitely enjoy reading more than I think I would enjoy smoking. 📚🚭

Yesterday I finished this book around 2 AM, I just couldn't stop. Esther Hautzig tells the story of how she got sent to Siberia with her family, and describes life there. It's beautifully written...

Food for thought, and food for the body! Tonight I'll go on reading this #nonfiction about the time the author spent in Siberia as a child. I hope to finish the book tonight, and share with you my review ;) #cookies
