Odds Against Tomorrow
Odds Against Tomorrow: A Novel | Nathaniel Rich
NEW YORK CITY, the near future: Mitchell Zukor, a gifted young mathematician, is hired by a mysterious new financial consulting firm, FutureWorld. The business operates out of a cavernous office in the Empire State Building; Mitchell is employee number two. He is asked to calculate worst-case scenarios in the most intricate detail, and his schemes are sold to corporations to indemnify them against any future disasters. This is the cutting edge of corporate irresponsibility, and business is booming. As Mitchell immerses himself in the mathematics of catastropheecological collapse, global war, natural disastershe becomes obsessed by a culture's fears. Yet he also loses touch with his last connection to reality: Elsa Bruner, a friend with her own apocalyptic secret, who has started a commune in Maine. Then, just as Mitchell's predictions reach a nightmarish crescendo, an actual worst-case scenario overtakes Manhattan. Mitchell realizes he is uniquely prepared to profit. But at what cost? At once an all-too-plausible literary thriller, an unexpected love story, and a philosophically searching inquiry into the nature of fear, Nathaniel Rich's Odds Against Tomorrow poses the ultimate questions of imagination and civilization. The future is not quite what it used to be. An NPR Best Book of 2013

Just finished listening to this on my way in to work this morning. I read Nathaniel Rich‘s King Zeno last year and loved it. Narrator on this book was good and enjoyed it at 1.5x speed - gave it the great urgency the characters experienced throughout the story. Loved the nerdy numbers/quant and the bit of crazy. Great “read” 🤓🚙📖 #recommendsday

Got this piece of mail today at work. Is it an omen or does art imitate life?

Began this last night after a night of trick or treating. Seems to be about a man who deals in extreme what if scenarios for a living. Corporations use his predictions to protect themselves from financial vulnerability but so far it is all just predictions. I have a feeling that very soon a worst case what if will be come a reality.

#TBRtemptation post 1! Today's TBR temptations come from my library's main upstairs display 👍🏻. This is a dystopian near-future NYC story that centers around math prodigy Mitchell Zukor. He's hired by a mysterious firm called FutureWorld to calculate in detail worst-case disasters. His conclusions are sold to other corps for indemnification. He begins to lose touch with reality. Then an actual w-c s does happen! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

I know it's fiction, but to this librarian it's troubling... "He examined so many topographical and geological maps of the city that the librarian informed him, in hushed voice, that he had been added to the FBI watch list."
