Pickpick

While Lawrence was getting on my nerves a bit, bashing me over the head with his metaphors, I was surprised by this one. I think Lawrence succeeds in creating characters that are real people. March and Banford are two women living together on a farm. (it‘s never explicitly stated that they are lesbians but I deduced it from their behavior.) First, a fox keeps infiltrating the henhouse. Then, a man infiltrates their own home. 180/1,001 #1001Books

Love me a fox! Lawrence's The Fox is a classic, but which other books 'capture' the fox? Any suggestions? ❤️🐺

Just found this in the lesbian section of the Pride Centre‘s library. Bantam with a 75 cents cover price. The back cover calls it “a brilliant novel of two manless women and the intruder who threatens their love.” (It‘s off to the booksale now.)

LeahBergen “Two manless women and the intruder who threatens their love”!! 😂😂😂 6y

Forgot to update on this one. It's a very short novel (most editions don't even clock 100 pages) but I stopped torturing myself -- I have had my fill of descriptions of soft or cunning eyes and mouths for one lifetime. I can't say for sure but felt like an outdated man's fantasy of "reforming" a lesbian.

This prose is abysmal and repetitive. Maybe I'm just uncouth since the especially eye rolling paragraphs are highlighted by other users in my Kindle edition but I'm not particularly enchanted by lines repeated with the words in slightly different order a bunch of times 🙄.

Started this for when we're outside -- I did finally get a new dedicated e-reader without glare but I refuse to use it until my case ships 😂. And my children are unruly so I got in maybe ten pages over several hours.

The fox in our garden reminded me of this great story. (And how great foxes are.) 🦊❤️

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Oh wow!! 🦊 what an amazing sight! 7y
PenguinInFlight I love foxes! ❤️🦊There is a really old barn at my mom‘s house that really doesn‘t get used for much anymore, and for the past 15 years or so, a fox has come and had her kits under the floorboards. They are adorable, and so fun to watch! I have one near my house that I see a few times a year, but no kits as of yet. (Weirdly related, youngest nephew‘s middle name is Fox, after our great-grandmother‘s maiden name.) 7y

And now: Random influx of ducks, potentially quacking about the Spanish Armada. Is this a metaphor for something? Does it signify at all? I don't know. 😩I still haven't even worked out the symbolism of the fox. This must be why it's on the Boxall 1001 Book list. It defies interpretation.

quote
Leniverse

"He never knew what she meant. Probably she didn't quite know herself."

And that summaries this novella perfectly. I have no idea why any of the characters do or say anything that they do, and they don't seem to have a clue themselves either. The word "vague" is used a lot. Vacant is more like it.

"Instead of her soul swaying with new life, it seemed to droop, to bleed, as if it were wounded." I came across this gorgeous vintage book at the #secondhandbookstore last week and fell in love with the cover! I read this dark and haunting novel on the airplane home. Two women live on a farm together peacefully until a man arrives and worms his way into their lives, causing all sorts of trouble. So tragic and beautifully written!
