Dutch House
Dutch House | Ann Patchett
Ann Patchett, the New York Times bestselling author of Commonwealth and State of Wonder, returns with her most powerful novel to date: a richly moving story that explores the indelible bond between two siblings, the house of their childhood, and a past that will not let them go."'Do you think it's possible to ever see the past as it actually was?' I asked my sister. We were sitting in her car, parked in front of the Dutch House in the broad daylight of early summer."At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril's son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on is one another. It is this unshakeable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts their futures.Set over the course of five decades, The Dutch House is a dark fairy tale about two smart people who cannot overcome their past. Despite every outward sign of success, Danny and Maeve are only truly comfortable when they're together. Throughout their lives they return to the well-worn story of what they've lost with humor and rage. But when at last they're forced to confront the people who left them behind, the relationship between an indulged brother and his ever-protective sister is finally tested. The Dutch House is the story of a paradise lost, a tour de force that digs deeply into questions of inheritance, love and forgiveness, of how we want to see ourselves and of who we really are. Filled with suspense, you may read it quickly to find out what happens, but what happens to Danny and Maeve will stay with you for a very long time.

This was my first book by Ann Patchett. I listened to it over audio, which I enjoyed the narration by Tom Hanks. I enjoyed the story & life of siblings Danny & Maeve. The siblings live through many hardships & tragedies growing up. Maeve continues to be the constant support & guidance for Danny as he grows up. It was an interesting story & highlights the bonds that siblings can have when faced with adversity. #bookspin book (June)

I‘m cheating and lumping my last 3 reads together before I get way behind on my posts.
The Dutch house was my favourite, I loved every page, although I will never be able to understand a mother leaving her children.
Project Hail Mary was fascinating and who wouldn‘t want an Alien spider for a friend?
Sea of tranquility, I enjoyed this but something was missing for me. I didn‘t connect to the characters as much as I would have liked.

Jeg I loved the Dutch House. 2y
CarolynM I found that aspect of Dutch House difficult too. When I was reading I thought she must have died and it was hidden from the children. I was so surprised when she turned up and disappointed that there wasn‘t a better explanation. Hope things are good with you, Nerissa😘 2y

Why is everything Ann Patchett writes literally the best thing I‘ve ever read? Like all of her other books, I absolutely loved this one!

Follow.my.read I had a special interest in the historical aspect of T1 diabetes as I have had it most my life! This is one of my favorite books!!! 3y

“The Dutch House” takes many of the ingredients of a classic fairy tale — a wicked stepmother, a lost treasure and a sibling bond tested by adversity — and turns them into an absorbing tale of love, loss and revenge. My only quibble with the book was that Danny, the narrator, was a fairly passive character compared to his sister, Maeve, the true protagonist.

I‘ve held off on reading The Dutch House bc for me, the anticipation of reading a new Ann Patchett book is almost as enjoyable as the book itself. But I finally reached my limits of anticipatory pleasure and read it. It had everything I hoped it would - a compelling narrative, lyrical, beautiful writing, rich characters. The only thing I don‘t like is that for the time being, there‘s no unread Ann Patchett book waiting for me on my shelves.

All the "abouts" I read for this book focused on how it is the story of two siblings over the course of 50 years, but to me it's a conversation on motherhood: those absent, terrible, and (occasionally) good. And it seems extraordinary that noone acknowledges-not in the book, not in reviews-that Maeve was functionally Danny's mother?
This is the second time I've managed to participate in #AuthorAMonth, though, so I'm quite proud of myself ?

One-of-a-kind setting, plot and family! However it was hard for me to connect with the 2 MCs so that was an uneasy feeling. Tom Hanks narrated the audiobook, and #unpopularopinion, he just sounded disengaged and tired.

I‘m in! My goal is three books, and the tagged book will be one of them. All the books will be from my #BookSpinBingo card.

We‘ve bubbled with our closest friends, and the four of us have a weekly euchre afternoon. This year we‘ve decided we‘ll do it on thanksgiving that week. None of us wants to go to a larger gathering, and my husband‘s family isn‘t having one; we‘ll have a zoom get-together for dessert. It‘s just one year.

MittenGirlPeach We‘ve already postponed our Christmas with my brother until spring, when we‘ll have a camping Christmas. We can all get through this if we‘re smart and think of others as well as ourselves. (edited) 4y

And here is my November list! It was a fun challenge coming up with these books. I started with Thanksgiving as the theme and worked out from there: home/houses, family, loved ones. Most are from my endlessly replenishing library stack, but there are some of my own included for good measure.

I listened to the audio, which was narrated by Tom Hanks. This is a coming of age story of a son of a landlord, and his bond with his sister and the house that brings everything together.
This was a highly recommended read, but my interest in the main character was not strong. I did like the idea of the detail of the house as a character and the people of the house were fun.

I was gifted an audible subscription for Christmas and after much deliberation I decided to spend my first credit on The Dutch House read by Tom Hanks. This was a good choice! Oh that voice! And I just love Ann Patchett‘s writing. Now I need to think about my next selection. I need some recommendations for great books with great narration. What are you‘re favourites?

CarolynM I listened to The Hate U Give and I'm sure I liked it better that way than I would have if I read it - the way the characters spoke was important and I wouldn't have created that in my head. 5y

Every good thing I heard about this book is true. It‘s Ann Patchett‘s best book so far and Tom Hanks‘ narration of the audiobook is perfect. I saw her on book tour and she was a delight! Great book to end my 2019 reading year.

This was one of those books that you hug to your chest after finishing. I was craving another warm, character-driven family saga after reading "Ask Again, Yes" and this didn't disappoint. Lots of fairy-tale elements and I loved the relationship between Danny and Maeve. I feel so grateful for having spent time with them.

This was one of my best book experiences of the year. The story is rich and touching but it was brought to perfection with Tom Hank‘s narration on the audio which I just can‘t rave enough about. I felt such loss when it was over. Excellent. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved this. It reminded me a bit of The Goldfinch - a family saga that spans years. Similar themes of loss and redemption. I could have read it in one sitting if I had had time. Ann Patchett is a wonder. Out in September.
