Parker: The Hunter
Parker: The Hunter | Donald E. Westlake, Darwyn Cooke
8 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
Darwyn Cooke, Eisner-Award-winning writer/artist, sets his artistic sights on bringing to life one of the true classics of crime fiction: Richard Stark's Parker. Stark was a pseudonym used by the revered and multi-award-winning author, Donald Westlake. The Hunter, the first book in the Parker series, is the story of a man who hits New York head-on like a shotgun blast to the chest. Betrayed by the woman he loved and double-crossed by his partner in crime, Parker makes his way cross-country with only one thought burning in his mind - to coldly exact his revenge and reclaim what was taken from him! Parker: The Hunter is the latest offering in IDW Publishing's series of Digital Graphic Novels. We've assembled the best of favorite brands and respected creators for you to collect on your digital bookshelf. Mehso-so

Darwyn Cooke is a one-of-a-kind artist. This was a gorgeous adaptation of a pitch-black crime thriller. But there was nothing redeemable about Parker. Sure, people did him dirty, but he kills without hesitation, and doesn't seem bothered with collateral damage. There was actually a troubling amount of violence towards women in this. Maybe there is more nuance in the novel, but this mostly seemed nasty for the sake of being nasty.

Loaded up my Kindle as well for the #bookchallenge2020, trying to find one to take part of & came across #LitsyAtoZ by @BookishMarginalia and signed up to do the mixed track. 1 book for every letter in the alphabet, either author last name or first word in title.

We shall see how this goes

All done! Category: Noir. According to Wikipedia, "a literary genre closely related to hardboiled genre with a distinction that the protagonist is not a detective, but instead either a victim, a suspect, or a perpetrator."
This description fits Richard Stark's Parker to a T and Darwyn Cooke's graphic novel adaptation is outstanding.

I'm going slow with this graphic novel only because I love Darwyn Cooke's art so very much. 1962 noir.

Godmotherx5 Very nice art. 8y
GuiltyFeat The Parker novels are works of art all by themselves. Not a wasted word in them. I have the first two Cooke adaptations and I will pick up the others at some point. Gone too soon, Mr. Cooke. 8y

Lindy @GuiltyFeat Not a wasted word is right. Pictorial storytelling. He is missed. 😔 8y
