So I love the Scarlet Pimpernel & when this book came out, billed as a YA/scifi riff on that tale I knew I had to read it! And although I enjoyed it when I read it back in 2014, the introduction of a pile of random characters in the last hundred pages of the book left me feeling a little confused - until I found out this is actually a sequel! Since then I have been meaning to read the first book & then treat this one to a reread, & thanks to ⬇️

So good! And now after reading this, I‘m going to need to break out my DVD of the Jane Seymour version of Scarlet Pimpernel for a rewatch. 😍 #howjessreadsin2019

This is a book I absolutely adored years ago so I wanted to reread it! I still really enjoyed everything that happened, and it's been so long since my last read that a couple moments were pretty shocking.

There've been a lot of retellings in the past several years. This one's based off of the Scarlet Pimpernel, which is a wonderful story, and one that I was excited to read. It is good but it fell, for me, into that area in which I struggle with YA retellings because I get tired of teenage thinking applied to adult stories. It was a grand new world though, rich in detail and thought through, so if retellings are your thing you should pick this up.

I absolutely adored this book! If you're interested in understanding the universe, I do recommend reading For Darkness Shows The Stars first. But if you just really like The Scarlet Pimpernel, you can definitely enjoy this as a stand alone. I forgot how much I enjoy Peterfreund's writing. She has a great way of using a story (The Scarlet Pimpernel in this case) as a foundation but making it entirely her own. So good! Wanted a little more from it but overall fantastic! 4🌟

Second book in a trilogy it is set in a very different place in the world of For Darkness Shows the Stars. Peterfreund writes charming characters that you want to get to know and the story - a retelling of the Scarlet Pimpernel was very enjoyable.
