This beautifully written, emotional debut perfect for fans of Lynda Mullaly Hunt or Ali Benjamin tells the story a girl, her special needs brother, and the summer they will never forget. "An engaging, honest book." --Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, Newbery Honor-winning author of The War That Saved My Life "A beautiful story of family, forgiveness, life on an island, and growing up.--Kate Messner, author of Breakout and The Seventh Wish Cat and her brother Chicken have always had a very special bond--Cat is one of the few people who can keep Chicken happy. When he has a "meltdown" she's the one who scratches his back and reads his favorite story. She's the one who knows what Chicken needs. Since their mom has had to work double-hard to keep their family afloat after their father passed away, Cat has been the glue holding her family together. But even the strongest glue sometimes struggles to hold. When a summer trip doesn't go according to plan, Cat and Chicken end up spending three weeks with grandparents they never knew. For the first time in years, Cat has the opportunity to be a kid again, and the journey she takes shows that even the most broken or strained relationships can be healed if people take the time to walk in one another's shoes.

Chicken says, “It wasn't the ending fo rus,“..“we have lots of pages left.“ People we love may die, but we must continue to live our lives because it is not the end for us.

I love cherries in the summer!

One of my favorite middle grades is Caterpillar Summer.

When visiting my uncle in Key West we were able to see dolphins. 😍

I read this book because it's a Golden Sower Award nominee. It's such a great book! All the feels..all the stars. Absolutely loved it.

“Being a parent is a kind of promise. A promise to stand by someone even if you think they‘re making a mistake. To love who you get, not who you think you‘re going to get.”

Cortg I love the cover!

This book deals with many serious topics but it isn‘t so DARK as some of the middle-grade I have read lately. Definitely a great, heartwarming read.

Okay so this could have been so good. Like so good. But the Mom was neglectful and I disliked her greatly. Uber bad parenting if you can even call it that. I did like learning how Chicken reacted to the world and I loved Cat‘s love for her family. I loved the grandparents but the Mom is a jerk. Cat should never have had the weight of the world on her shoulders and ugh. Just ugh. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Caterpillar Summer was a touching novel about Cat who takes care of her brother who has autism since her mom is single and works several jobs to provide for them. They end up with their grandparents who she has never met and learns a lot about her family history, making a new friend along the way. The ending even made me cry. Featuring Calli in her snuggle ball.
