Effi Briest | Theodor Fontane

Effi Briest, the classic German realist novel, follows a young woman through her life and marriage. She is an innocent when she is married to the social climbing Instetten, and longs for wordly things. When she is left alone by her husband, who is pursuing his political career, she succumbs to the flattery of another man. Her adultery has wide and tragic consequences on the rest of her life.

This book is written weirdly detached and without much emotion. Style and plot are very rational and in line with how things are supposed to be and go among the aristocracy at the end of the 19th century. Only Effi Briest is not behaving according to principles (although she tries). She marries a much older man and her character reminds me of Emma Bovary, Anna Karenina and Eline Vere. Not surprising but a very satisfying book. #1001books

julesG Had to read and analyse it in school. Completely agree with your review. 3y
Hooked_on_books You always have such great pictures! 3y
BarbaraBB @julesG I wonder why I never l read it back then. When I did read Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina! 3y

Here is to a better reading week: The Fire-Dwellers is for the #Manawakans buddyread, Effi Briest is a gorgeous #Persephone and #1001books and last but not least, Nightbitch has got me super intrigued by many weird reviews on Litsy, among which that by @Megabooks of course!

vivastory Looking forward to the buddy read! 3y
BarbaraBB @vivastory Me too. I just started it and it‘s written in a sort of unique way. 3y

The German version of the “adultery classic”. Effi is a very young, exuberant, and naive girl when she marries a middle aged, proper, career-oriented man. No one will be surprised by the ending! Great writing and I loved Effi! #1001books #bookspin

BarbaraBB That is an encouraging review, thanks! It has been sitting on my shelves for years and it somehow scared me! 4y
JenniferP @BarbaraBB it wasn‘t hard to read - and it‘s pretty short! 4y

Starting this today and wondering how to pronounce “Briest” - one syllable like “priest”, two syllables like “Bree-est”? Other? #1001books

Ruthiella Like “priest” but with a b. 4y
JenniferP @Ruthiella thank you! 4y

December #bookspin in the bag.

I‘m so pissed I bought this edition without realizing Persephone publishes it. 🤦🏼‍♀️ That said, it‘s such a lush, atmospheric, melancholy novel. Quite a few sleigh rides happening, so this made it a great time of year for a read. The book really torments you at the end with the idea of happiness v society v morality. Tragic characters, everyone is well intentioned but everyone loses.

Megabooks 🎉🎉🥳🥳 first bookspin!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks Ah no, I hate it when there's a gorgeous copy I could have gotten instead!! Great review, though!! 4y

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @glo1 you can get one on Amazon! I have one but rarely use it! I should do better!! #SelfCare ❤️ 4y
Reviewsbylola I‘m so mad I didn‘t buy the Persephone! Literally just finished it and thought it was great! @BarbaraBB 4y
Reviewsbylola I think I got it at Aldi @glo1 but I imagine @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks is right about Amazon! 4y
BarbaraBB That is good to know. The book scares me a little even though it‘s Persephone! 4y
Reviewsbylola The translation def made it a little difficult. Quite a bit of German names and places. But it‘s a great story! @BarbaraBB 4y

Ok, I think I‘ve got the hang of #bookspinbingo now @TheAromaofBooks @Megabooks I‘m excited!! 🥳🥳

My #bookspin if Effi Briest and my #doublebookspin is The Vengeance of Mothers. I actually think I‘ll start with the latter. Can‘t wait to see how much I can mark off my bingo. 😋

Megabooks Awesome! So excited you‘re playing this month! 4y
Liz_M Effi Briest is good! Similar story to Irretrievable, but more focused, if I remember correctly. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Looks great!! This is one of those challenges that makes more sense when you actually see everyone putting their boards together 😂 Glad to have you along!! 4y

My #weeklyforecast is actually a #remainderoftheyearforecast 😆 I have three goals—

Read 100 more books to complete my Goodreads challenge

Be more thoughtful about my selections for #classicschallenge2020. Number wise, I‘m on track for my goal (15/24 currently) but I have barely read any of the books I intended to read.

Finish the last two quarters of #booked2020. I‘m at 2/6 for summer quarter.

Cinfhen Very ambitious goals 🙌🏻I sort of dropped the ball on the #classicsChallenge2020 🙈I just don‘t enjoy them all that much 🙊I was hoping for one per month but I skipped June and I think May too 🤷🏼‍♀️ (edited) 4y
Reviewsbylola I end up liking a lot of them but I‘m not always in the mood to invest the energy. You have to catch me in the right mindset. 😂 @Cinfhen 4y

The main character of the tagged book was married at 17 to a man twice her age. It wasn‘t a good experience for either of them. I think she did #TooMuchTooYoung

erzascarletbookgasm Thanks for sharing, I do not know this author! 5y
TheEllieMo @squirrelbrain did you know there is an app? Well, there is on the iPhone, not sure about Android. All 1300+ books that have ever been included in any edition of Boxall are included. 5y

Very So-So, it could be the translation I had, it seemed to ramble quite a bit. On the plus side I can clear that one off my shelves and make some room for new books :)

Story- child bride named Effi married to a much older man and is befriended by a womanizer

Strengths:
Excellent characters sketches.
The settings speak volumes about the situation described. When Effi is lonely and scared the house she lives in has the vibes of a haunted house.

The womanizer does not play a large role in the novel; rather it is Effi who wants to reclaim her marriage. She isn't shallow but does mistakes because of her age.
