The Triumph of the Moon
The Triumph of the Moon: A History of Modern Pagan Witchcraft | Ronald Hutton
4 posts | 3 read | 12 to read
Ronald Hutton is known for his colourful, provocative, and always exhaustively researched, studies on original subjects. This work is no exception: the first full-scale scholarly study of the only religion England has ever given the world, that of modern pagan witchcraft, which has now spread from English shores across four continents. Hutton examines the nature of that religion and its development, and offers a microhistory of attitudes to paganism, witchcraft, and magic in British society since 1800. Village cunning folk and Victorian ritual magicians, classicists and archaeologists, leaders of woodcraft and scouting movements, Freemasons and members of rural secret societies, all appear in the pages of this book. Also included are some of the leading figures of English literature, from the Romantic poets to W B Yeats, D H Lawrence, and Robert Graves, as well as the main personalities who have represented pagan witchcraft to the world since 1950.

I was thrilled to see tagged book be released as an audiobook and I‘m finally getting around to listening to the Libro.fm I bought months ago. I tried so many times to read print version only to give up because how meticulous Hutton is with his research of modern Paganism.
Pistachio on the other hand was not as delighted as I was and immediately fell back asleep once I stopped annoying him to pose for a pic. #catsoflitsy

Bookzombie Pistachio is an adorable name. 💕🐈 3y
SconsinBookyBadger @Bookzombie my brother who named him was inspired by how Pistachio stashes his toys in secret hiding spots 😸 3y

Attending a virtual lecture with THE Ronald Hutton!
If you haven‘t checked them out, The Last Tuesday Society is doing all kinds of lectures and talks with quirky and underground topics. Great stuff, I‘ve attended so many at this point.

Current audiobook. And probably the one I‘ll be on for a while, hah!

An extremely thorough and academic partial history of witchcraft.

Chrissyreadit How is it? 4y
SconsinBookyBadger Nice to see TTotM as an audiobook. I bailed on it years ago, but it had more to do with lack of time to focus on such a meticulously detailed book. 4y
SkeletonKey @Chrissyreadit - Excellent so far, the guy who wrote it is a folklorist and I‘ve seen him talk a few times. He‘s very precise but also has a good sense of humor. Like I said, it‘s more academic than instructional but a good intro to the topics. 4y

SkeletonKey @AnansiGirl - Yeah! It‘s definitely a thicc chonker, haha. 4y
jmofo Ronald Hutton‘s a real trip! I‘m going to have to check this out! (I hope you are well! I‘m sorry I am such a social vacancy.) 4y
SkeletonKey @jmofo - I recommend it! Hope you‘re doing well also 🖤 4y

#bookmail #bookhaul ! I stopped by my university bookstore after work and remembered that not only do they have most major titles...I get a discount! 🤘🏻So I grabbed a bright blue journal for my BuJo: Reading Edition...and then came home to find one of my used books came! I've been wanting to read this one for a while (I'm really into UK folklore/religion) but my library lost it..so I gave in and bought one! Can't wait to make a g&t and dive in!

The_Literary_Jedi I am very interested to read your review and opinion of Hutton's work. There's quite the argument both for and against his assertions in this work 8y
katedensen Love those notebooks! 8y
brendanmleonard @The_Literary_Jedi I have liked what I've read of him in the small doses I have read, and I'm a dabbler in this topic, with an aim of reading more widely- but i'll have to look up counterpoints! 8y

brendanmleonard @katedfisher I am addicted to them, lol - I have at least five! 8y
[DELETED] 3216391035 Just ordered the exact blue journal! Love them! 8y
katedensen @brendanmleonard You're in NYC, yes? Go to Paper Presentation on W. 18th--they have an amazing notebook selection. 8y
moranadatter I've been meaning to read that too. I look forward to seeing what you think of it. 8y
Zelma Looks perfect for fall! I really want a good witch book this season. I keep trying to get my hands on Witches in America by Alex Mar and have been foiled at the library. I may need to just buy it. 8y
alwz Love seeing a fellow billet journaler on Litsy! 8y
brendanmleonard @Zelma I saw Alex Mar talk about Witches of America earlier this year - sounded so great! 8y
brendanmleonard @alwz there are a number of us around! 8y
LindaGrace812 I'm a bullet journaler, too, but mine is completely unfancy - artistic I am not! But I do use cute bullets and I try to use specific colors for specific types of things but even that is tough for me. So I just enjoy my bullets and filling them in as I finish tasks and meetings! ❤️ 8y
brendanmleonard @LindaGrace812 I am a very minimalist/basic journaler! I also use colors and shapes above everything. 8y
LindaGrace812 @brendanmleonard I'm glad I'm not the only one! When I first started, I got so overwhelmed looking at images and videos of other people's bullet journals! I finally just started doing what works for me and I'm a much more productive bulleter! 8y
Zelma @brendanmleonard makes me more determined to read it. 👍 8y
brendanmleonard @LindaGrace812 me too! When I started in January I didn't even know there was a community that was super intense, so I just got a pocket notebook and used it regularly! It was once when I started using the Leuchtterms that I learned about the intense ways you could really break it out, promptly got in my head, and wrote less. I reset at the end of August and have been doing it every day! 8y
brendanmleonard @katedfisher I really like Paper Presentation but A.I. Friedman on the same block gives me an discount with my university ID 😂 8y
