The Infinite Noise
The Infinite Noise: A Bright Sessions Novel | Lauren Shippen
17 posts | 17 read | 24 to read
A stunning, original debut novel based on the wildly popular and award-winning podcast The Bright Sessions. Caleb Michaels is a sixteen-year-old champion running back. Other than that his life is pretty normal. But when Caleb starts experiencing mood swings that are out of the ordinary for even a teenager, his life moves beyond typical. Caleb is an Atypical, an individual with enhanced abilities. Which sounds pretty cool except Caleb's ability is extreme empathyhe feels the emotions of everyone around him. Being an empath in high school would be hard enough, but Caleb's life becomes even more complicated when he keeps getting pulled into the emotional orbit of one of his classmates, Adam. Adam's feelings are big and all-consuming, but they fit together with Caleb's feelings in a way that he can't quite understand. Caleb's therapist, Dr. Bright, encourages Caleb to explore this connection by befriending Adam. As he and Adam grow closer, Caleb learns more about his ability, himself, his therapistwho seems to know a lot more than she lets onand just how dangerous being an Atypical can be. What if the X-Men, instead of becoming superheroes, decided to spend some time in therapy? (Vox on The Bright Sessions)

This is based on a very cool podcast, the Bright Sessions, about Atypicals who see a therapist to work on their powers.
Caleb is an empath who gets understandably overwhelmed by the emotions of those around him, especially in high school. Then he meets Adam, whose feelings drown out all the others around him.
I loved the detailed descriptions of emotions throughout, as colors and animate forces. There's also a realistic depiction of depression.

I didn't know that the Bright Sessions even had any book related to the podcast, so when I found this on Goodreads I was curious and got it immediately. I got myself in the podcast last year and I'm currently a few episodes in on the fourth season, which is what I recommend you to be at to not be completely confused with the plot of this book. If you loved the podcast as much as I have, this is for you. (less) [edit]

Literally nothing happens in this book except teenage feelings. Pros: the feelings are really well described, and the book is less than 400 pages. Cons: there‘s a great premise to this series that this book doesn‘t capitalize on, and there‘s no plot (except luuuvvvv). Even Harlequin romances make more of an effort to have a plot. It‘s an easy read that only requires half of your attention.

AnxiousNia It goes great with the podcast. The podcast is really the plot, the books mostly go into the lives of most of the characters. ‘The bright sessions‘ podcast is awesome. 14mo

Kind of a sci fi twist to this YA m/m romance. #lgbtqia Cute and well-written.

I enjoyed this one. Did most on audio and both narrators did a good job.

Cute, though familiar. I liked the science-fiction intrigue around Caleb‘s ability, & the descriptions of various emotions were really well rendered. I liked even more that superpowers were secondary to the mental/emotional well-being of the characters. Adam & Caleb were charming protagonists & narrators, but their love story felt very similar to others (see: All The Bright Places, or We Contain Multitudes). Sweet, but kind of expected. ★★★☆☆.

#currentlyreading | someone described this as “what if the X-Men went to therapy instead?” & I am sooooo intrigued.

Wow. It was so good to be back in the world of the Bright Sessions and I loved this very much. With that said, the pacing of the latter half of the book felt a bit odd because it felt like the plot came into play so late in the game. It didn‘t bother me a whole lot because I know and love the podcast but in book form it just felt a little strange. But overall I loved it and I think it fills in some of the gaps in the podcast very nicely💚

Taking advantage of the nice weather for some hammock time while the kiddies play outside. Let‘s see if they let me get any reading done. 😜

I wasn‘t supposed to start new books but here we are😂 I really needed something lighter in my reading pile so I decided to plunge into the world of the Bright Sessions again. And I have to say that it was an excellent choice, I am loving this so much💚

Spending some quiet time this morning with my audio book and my kitty-cat. This book is not what I expected! Caleb is a powerful empath and absorbs other people‘s emotions... which makes high school suck even more. I‘m really enjoying this story!

There is a lot about this book I like. There is Adam, who is intelligent, sweet but suffers from depression. There is Caleb who has a super human ability to feel others emotions so deeply they tangle constantly with his own. There is their relationship, which is so sweet, you can‘t help but root for them. While at times the writing can be a little too on the nose, it is a good book.

The emotional draw of this book is real. As a fiction writer, I had some issues here and there but all in all, good book. I couldn't put it down and read it in 3 days while going back and forth with another book (audiobook).

I highly recommend this book. It is in varying perspectives about two teen boys who are struggling with their identities and become friends. It examines mental health and the impact of friendship and love and rising above stereotypes. It also had a bit of a sci-fi twist to it which was super captivating and I can‘t wait to read the next book! Perfect day to read by the pool! #torteenpublishers #bookishfirst

Back in late 2015, I discovered a podcast called The Bright Sessions and I was immediately sucked in by the incredible performances and storytelling. Soon, it was not only one of my favorite podcasts, but one of the most meaningful in my own journey with my mental health. In this book, which expands on the story of Caleb and Adam - two main characters in the podcast - is just even more of Lauren Shippen‘s magic. #staystrange 💚

TheBookAddict Is the podcast still out there? I just read synopsis and the first 2 chapter and I‘m hooked! I looked up on goodreads and it‘s not supposed to come out until September 😢. 😔 5y
patriciathang @TheBookAddict Yes! The podcast concluded about a year ago, but all four seasons are still available for your listening pleasure! Just search “The Bright Sessions” wherever you get podcasts and start from the beginning! 5y
