The Night Visitors
The Night Visitors: A Novel | Carol Goodman
13 posts | 13 read | 13 to read
The latest thriller from the internationally bestselling author of The Lake of Dead Languages and The Other Mother, a story of mistaken identities and missed chances, forgiveness, and vengeance. Carol Goodman is, simply put, a stellar writer.Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of The Red Hunter ALICE gets off a bus in the middle of a snowstorm in Delphi, NY. She is fleeing an abusive relationship and desperate to protect... OREN, ten years old, a major Star Wars fan and wise beyond his years. Though Alice is wary, Oren bonds nearly instantly with... MATTIE, a social worker in her fifties who lives in an enormous run-down house in the middle of the woods. Mattie lives alone and is always available, and so she is the person the hotline always calls when they need a late-night pickup. And although according to protocol Mattie should take Alice and Oren to a local shelter, instead she brings them home for the night. She has plenty of room, she says. What she doesn't say is that Oren reminds her of her little brother, who died thirty years ago at the age of ten. But Mattie isn't the only one withholding elements of the truth. Alice is keeping her own secrets. And as the snowstorm worsens around them, each woman's past will prove itself unburied, stirring up threats both within and without.

This book was rather good. There were a few twists I didn't see coming and I did enjoy the supernatural elements. Would recommend.

Thanks to LibraryThing Early Reviewer for a copy of this book for honest review. Setting is Catskills NY. Alice is fleeing an abusive relationship with 10 year old Oren. Social worker, Mattie, takes them in her house for the night. Mattie has secrets of her own and each woman‘s past stirs up threats. Strong characters and gripping suspense. Brings problems of domestic abuse to the the foreground and shows how community can help. Harrowing tale!

dragondrool I read this a couple of weeks ago. Pretty good. 6y

Carol Goodman is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine, as I really enjoy the atmosphere and pacing of everything she writes. Her latest, The Night Visitors, is no exception. While the ending was a bit too tidy and some of the resolutions of the various plot lines were a bit too coincidental for my taste, I did find this one to be well-written, quick-paced, and engaging. I loved the characters of Mattie and Oren. Two thumbs up! 👍👍

2.75 stars

I really enjoyed the first half of this story. It was compelling with both dramatic and suspenseful elements. I was eager to see where the book would go. I liked the spooky element, which included unexplainable happenings that suggested a ghost story underneath the surface of it all.

Unfortunately, the author lost me on the second half.

My Friday evening consists of kitty snuggles and finishing this book while the husband plays video games. I love these types of nights.

TheLibrarian @CoffeeNBooks Perfect example of her being a turd. Out of all the floor space, she decided to throw up on my Hobbit tote bag. ☹️ 6y
CoffeeNBooks @TheLibrarian Oh no! 😕 I swear cats do that stuff on purpose to remind us that they're really in charge, lol! My cats are convinced that the house belongs to them, and they're just nice enough to let us live here. 😹 6y
TheLibrarian @CoffeeNBooks Didn‘t you know that cats rule the world? 🤣 6y
